Erfurt

Erfurt is the capital of Thuringia, in central Germany, and one of the country's best-preserved medieval towns: its old center largely escaped wartime destruction, so you walk among genuine half-timbered houses and cobbled lanes rather than reconstructions. This is where Martin Luther lived as an Augustinian monk and studied at the university. It's a manageable, student-flavored, laid-back city and a handy base for Thuringia, with Weimar and Eisenach a short train ride away.

Mejor épocaBest time

May to September, with long, mild days. The climate is central-European continental: cold, grey winters, gentle summers. Advent brings a well-known Christmas market on the Domplatz.

PresupuestoBudget

Eastern Germany runs cheaper than Munich or Frankfurt. Lodging, beer and food come in noticeably below the big western metros.

EntradaEntry

Germany is in the Schengen area; many nationalities enter visa-free for short stays.

The old town is entirely walkable. Beyond it there's an efficient tram network, and the main station links to Weimar, Eisenach and the rest of Germany by rail.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Erfurt? How much do you need per month in Erfurt?

Erfurt is the capital of Thuringia — about 214,000 people, an intact medieval old town, and one of the German cities where you can still live without earning a Munich salary. It works if you want a quiet base that's cheap by German standards and well connected by train to the middle of the country, and you don't mind that social life happens in German. It doesn't work if you're expecting a nomad scene: there is no meaningful remote-work community here, and without German you'll feel isolated faster than you think.

Fine for work, no drama. A typical Erfurt flat gets cable or VDSL at 100–250 Mbps, stable, with much weaker upload than download (very German): you can have 250 down and 25–40 up, worth checking if you push heavy video or big files. Fiber to the home exists but the rollout is partial and building-dependent — ask about the exact address before signing. Power cuts and network outages aren't a thing here. Mobile is solid inside the city; out in rural Thuringia and on some regional trains coverage drops, so don't plan on taking work calls from the train. Watch the admin side: home internet usually means a 24-month contract and installation can take weeks, which is why many people start on a mobile data plan.

CoworkingCoworking

Minimal scene. Erfurt has a handful of small spaces tied to the university, to local startup initiatives, and to a loft or two in the old town — no big chains, nothing built for passing nomads, and several function more as shared offices for local startups than as drop-in desks. I'm not naming names because they open and close and I don't want to send you to a locked door: find them once you're there. Flexible desk monthly: ≈US$150–200; day pass ≈US$15–20 (ballpark — supply is thin and prices move). Real alternatives: the university library, the city library, and old-town cafés — though in Germany nursing one coffee for four hours isn't always welcomed. If your work depends on a good coworking, this isn't your city.

Altstadt: the medieval core — gorgeous, fully walkable, the priciest and the noisiest on weekends and during the Domplatz Christmas market. Andreasvorstadt: just north of the center, studenty, alternative, good prices, and the easiest place to run into young people from elsewhere. Krämpfervorstadt and Johannesvorstadt: east side, period buildings, quiet, well served by tram, the best price-to-quality balance. Löbervorstadt and Brühlervorstadt: south and southwest, green, bourgeois, right up against the Steiger forest — ideal if you want calm and a morning run, a bit pricier. International students tend to land in the north, near the University of Erfurt on Nordhäuser Straße.

ComunidadCommunity

Be honest with yourself: there is no nomad community here. What there is, is a small university city with international students and some outsiders working for the regional administration, the university, and the public sector. Meeting people happens the classic German way: the Verein (sports club, choir, allotment garden), neighborhood life, work, and the bar where they start recognizing you. Day-to-day language is German, full stop — at the bakery, at the immigration office, at the doctor, in your lease. English gets you through the university and with younger people, but real life runs in German, and people who don't learn it end up talking only to other foreigners. Spanish-speaking community: it exists, but it's small — more students and mixed couples than a scene. One upside: Erfurt is a rail hub with ICE service, and Weimar, Jena, Leipzig, Nuremberg and Berlin are a short train ride away when you need more city.

Three things a friend would tell you before you book the flight. One: bureaucracy comes first and blocks everything else — Anmeldung (address registration) in your first days, and without that slip you can't easily open a bank account or sign contracts. Landlords will also ask for a Schufa (credit record) that a newcomer doesn't have, so line up a guarantor, offer several months up front, or start in a WG. And German flats rent out genuinely empty — often with no kitchen at all, so budget that separately. Two: Germany has NO digital nomad visa. If you're not from the EU, your route is usually the freelance/self-employment permit (§21 AufenthG) filed at the local Ausländerbehörde, which wants a plan, clients, and often ties to Germany — and in a small city the individual case officer's judgment carries a lot of weight; confirm the current requirements with the office before you commit to anything. Health insurance is mandatory, not optional. Three, and this one is uncomfortable but real: Thuringia is an eastern state with a very high far-right vote (the AfD came first in the 2024 state election) and documented racist incidents above the German average. The city of Erfurt is more mixed and calmer than the villages around it, but if you're visibly non-white you should know this going in — especially at night in outlying areas and on regional trains to small towns. Bonus: winter from November to February is gray, cold and very dark — sunset just after half past four, and that sinks a lot of people who arrived charmed in summer.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
