For over a century it was the heart of the Dutch textile industry, and when that collapsed the city reinvented itself around the University of Twente, a tech school with its own campus. That gives it a young, practical character, far less touristy than the cities of the Dutch west. A fireworks factory disaster in 2000 destroyed an entire neighborhood, which was rebuilt; it's part of the city's recent history.
