Dresden, capital of the state of Saxony, is one of eastern Germany's most beautiful cities, on the banks of the Elbe river. It was the court of the Saxon electors, and its baroque sandstone old town earned it the nickname 'Florence on the Elbe.' In February 1945 Allied bombing flattened it almost entirely; what you see downtown today is largely meticulous reconstruction, crowned by the Frauenkirche, rebuilt stone by stone and reopened in 2005. It's a city of museums, opera and palaces, with a young, alternative Neustadt across the river.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Dresde? How much do you need per month in Dresde?
Dresden works if you want a cheap, safe, well-run European base without the Berlin or Munich price circus — it's one of Germany's most affordable big cities to actually live in. It works badly if you want a large nomad scene, sunshine, or a life that runs in English: daily life here happens in German, winter is grey and dark, and German bureaucracy doesn't bend. And here's what the blogs skip: Saxony is among the states with the strongest far-right vote in the country, and that lands differently depending on how you look.

Here's the surprise: Germany lags on fiber-to-the-home. In Dresden the norm isn't FTTH but coaxial cable (≈250–1,000 Mbps down, but asymmetric and weak upload, roughly ≈10–50 Mbps depending on the plan — exactly what matters for video calls and pushing big files), or VDSL at ≈50–100 Mbps in older buildings. Real fiber exists in new builds and some areas, but don't assume it: ask about the specific building, not the city. Good news: it's genuinely stable, no blackouts or drops; when it works, it works all month. Bad news: home internet contracts usually run 24 months and installation can take weeks, so if you're staying 3 months, find a flat with internet already included and stay out of contracts. Mobile: solid 4G/5G across the city; in Germany signal drops in rural areas and on trains, and data plans are expensive by European standards.
CoworkingCoworking
Small scene but a real one, and more technically serious than you'd expect: Dresden is the heart of "Silicon Saxony" (chip fabs and industrial suppliers) and has a large technical university, TU Dresden, so the spaces skew toward startups, engineering and the university ecosystem rather than postcard nomad coworkings. Monthly flex desk ≈US$150–200; a fixed desk costs noticeably more. I won't invent space names — they open and close; once there, look around Neustadt and near TU Dresden, and ask for a trial day before paying for a month. Careful with cafés: plenty of German neighborhood spots aren't laptop places and some say so outright, so don't plan on café-hopping your workday.
Si quieres estirar el presupuesto, mira Pieschen, Löbtau y Friedrichstadt, más obreros y más baratos, todavía bien conectados por tranvía.Äußere Neustadt is the short answer: the city's alternative quarter, streets packed with bars, cafés, young people and foreigners, and where almost every newcomer ends up — also the priciest and the loudest at night. Innere Neustadt, right next door, is calmer and tidier, along the Elbe and one bridge from the old town. Striesen and Blasewitz, out east, are green, residential and genuinely livable: handsome old buildings, a direct tram downtown, better value if you can live with less nightlife. Südvorstadt, next to TU Dresden, is student territory: cheap, young, with the university's international crowd. To stretch the budget, look at Pieschen, Löbtau and Friedrichstadt — more working-class, cheaper, still well connected by tram.
ComunidadCommunity
This isn't Lisbon or Berlin — you won't trip over nomads here. The foreign community exists but orbits TU Dresden and the tech industry (exchange students, researchers, engineers) rather than laptop people on tourist visas. There are Spanish speakers, mostly Spanish and Latin American students at the university, but it's a small group. In Neustadt and around the university English gets you through; outside that (doctor, city hall, bank, the corner bakery) it's German, full stop. And the Saxon temperament is reserved: friendly fast, friends slowly, so building a circle takes longer than in southern Europe. What does work: language tandems, university international events, and sports or hobby clubs — joining a Verein is the genuinely German way to meet people.
Four things a friend would tell you straight. One, the politics: Saxony is among the German states with the strongest far-right support (along with Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt), and Pegida started right here in Dresden in 2014. Day-to-day life downtown is calm and the city is safe by international standards — the typical problem is theft and pickpocketing, not violence — but if you're not white the experience can differ, especially at night outside the center and in the surrounding towns. Not to scare you, just so you arrive informed. Two, the bureaucracy: you must do the Anmeldung (address registration) within 14 days, and you need the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, a form signed by your landlord; without that registration you can't open a bank account or much else, and many short-term rentals won't provide it. Germany has no digital nomad visa: you either enter as a Schengen tourist (90 days in any 180) or go the self-employed/freelance route, which requires health insurance — mandatory, and not cheap — plus proof of income; that route is well-worn in Berlin, and Dresden's immigration office sees it far less often. Three, the everyday: rental deposits run up to 3 months' cold rent, "unfurnished" in Germany often literally means no kitchen, it gets dark around 4pm in December and winter is properly grey, everything closes on Sundays, cash still rules at many small businesses, and the moment you register, the Rundfunkbeitrag finds you (public broadcasting fee, ≈€18/month per household, mandatory even with no TV). Four, connectivity: Dresden isn't on the fast rail spine. Berlin is ≈2h and Prague ≈2h15, but Munich or Frankfurt are 4–6h, and Dresden's airport is small with few routes, so cheap flights usually mean leaving from Berlin or Prague. And every figure above is converted from euros — if the exchange rate moves, so does the number.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
