San Sebastián (Donostia in Basque) is probably the prettiest city on the Basque coast: a shell-shaped bay, green hills on either side and elegant Belle Époque architecture. It's the world capital of the pintxo, its Old Town lined with bars, and holds one of the densest clusters of Michelin stars on the planet. City beach, surf at the Zurriola and the Film Festival in September: few cities its size offer so much.
Mejor épocaBest time
June to September for beach and buzz, though the Cantabrian climate is rainy even in summer. May and September are quieter and still pleasant.
PresupuestoBudget
Expensive by Spanish standards, especially lodging in summer and during the Festival. Grazing on pintxos stays reasonable if you pace the round; fine dining is another matter.
EntradaEntry
Spain is in Schengen: many nationalities enter visa-free for short stays. The French border (Biarritz, Bayonne) is under an hour away.
It's a walking city: everything important is on foot or a stroll along the bay. There are good city buses (dbus) and a funicular up Monte Igueldo.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en San Sebastián?How much do you need per month in San Sebastián?
Internet y transporte no te van a dar problemas; la vivienda y la lluvia, sí.San Sebastián works if what you want is concentrated quality of life: a city of ~190,000 you can cross on foot, a beach downtown, mountains next door, serious food, and one of the safest places in Spain. It works badly if money is tight: it's one of Spain's most expensive rental markets, and the real problem isn't the price, it's finding a long-term flat at all. Internet and transport won't give you trouble; housing and rain will.

This is the easy part. Spain has one of Europe's best fiber-to-the-home networks and San Sebastián is well covered: 600 Mb or 1 Gb symmetric for ≈US$35–45/month is the norm, installed in days, not weeks. Fiber is stable and video calls hold up; power cuts are not a recurring issue (the April 2025 Iberian blackout was an exceptional event, not the routine). Mobile 4G/5G coverage is solid across the city and along the roads to Bilbao and France; it degrades, as everywhere, once you head into the Gipuzkoan hills and closed valleys. If you rent furnished by the month, ask BEFORE signing what fiber the flat already has — inheriting the landlord's line saves you the setup.
CoworkingCoworking
The scene exists but it's small-city small: few spaces, very little churn of passing nomads, and mostly locals — Basque startups, freelancers, people from the innovation ecosystem. A flex desk runs around ≈US$180–220/month; a fixed desk goes up from there. I'm not naming specific coworkings, because in a city this size they open and close fast: find them once you land and go see them — most will let you try a day. What does reliably exist is Tabakalera, the cultural center in Egia, whose Ubik media library works as a free public workspace with good wifi (not a formal coworking — don't expect call booths or monitors). Plenty of freelancers here just work from home and use cafés, but Donostia cafés are pintxo-and-bar places more than laptop places — don't count on camping four hours in just any of them.
Gros is the default nomad neighborhood: across the river, facing Zurriola (the surf beach), full of bars, young, and entirely walkable. It's the priciest after Centro. Centro — the 19th-century grid known as the Área Romántica, next to La Concha — is beautiful and brutally expensive, more well-off families and tourists than nomads. Amara Berri is the sensible pick: residential, orderly, well connected, a bit cheaper, 15-20 minutes on foot from the center. Egia, next to Tabakalera and the train station, is the most alternative and among the most affordable of the central ring, and it's rising. El Antiguo, by Ondarreta beach and the university, is quiet and student-heavy. Practical note: nearly all of this is done on foot or by bike along the promenade; the city bus (Dbus) is good and cheap, and with the Mugi card a ride costs around a euro, so many people never buy a monthly pass.
ComunidadCommunity
Day-to-day life runs in Spanish with zero friction; Basque (euskera) is very present — signage, schools, plenty of people using it with each other — but nobody expects you to speak it, and learning a few words goes a long way. English gets by in hospitality and tourism, less so on the street than in Barcelona. There's a foreign community, but it's small and fairly student-flavored: Basque Culinary Center, Tecnun, the public university (UPV/EHU), surfers, seasonal workers. Meeting people to go out with is easy (surf, hiking, running, language exchanges, the bar culture itself); making real local friends takes longer, because social life here revolves around the cuadrilla — friend groups formed in adolescence that don't open up fast. It isn't hostility, it's just how it works. If you come for three months, your circle will mostly be other outsiders.
Lo que nadie te diceWhat nobody tells you
Tres avisos honestos. Three honest warnings. One: housing is the real filter. There's a genuine shortage of long-term rentals and a lot of stock lives off tourism, so "seasonal" September-to-June contracts aimed at students are everywhere — and in July and August you're the one moving out while the landlord charges summer rates. Start looking weeks ahead, don't land without a plan, and expect to be asked for guarantees: by law the housing deposit is one month, but landlords routinely also want a guarantor, payslips, or months paid up front. Two: it rains, and it really rains. San Sebastián is among Spain's rainiest cities, grey skies much of the year and showers even in August; if your mood depends on sun, this isn't your winter base. Three: the city is small and summer saturates it — Semana Grande (Aste Nagusia) in mid-August fills the Old Town and Gros with noise until dawn. On the upside: safety is very high and there's no "avoid it at night" zone. On paperwork: if you're not from the EU you enter on the Schengen 90-day tourist allowance, and Spain does have a remote-work visa route, but requirements and processing times change and each consulate applies them its own way — confirm at the official source before buying a ticket. And watch the mental accounting: everything here is paid in euros, and the figures on this page are converted to dollars (at roughly €1 ≈ US$1.10) only so you can compare cities; exchange rates move, so treat these as order of magnitude, not an exact budget.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
