¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Craiova? How much do you need per month in Craiova?
Craiova is a university and industrial city in Oltenia, southwestern Romania: genuinely cheap, with some of the fastest and cheapest fiber in Europe, and no nomad scene at all. It works if you want a quiet European base where your money stretches far further than in Lisbon or Prague, you can cope with Romanian in daily life, and you bring your own social life (partner, job, university). It does not work if you want busy coworkings, meetups or an airport with real route choice — none of that is here.

This is Craiova's best card, and it's not hype: Romania has some of the fastest and cheapest fiber in Europe, and Craiova is well wired. You get symmetric 1 Gbps for ≈US$10 a month from the national operators, and in a normal apartment block installation takes days, not weeks. Latency to Western Europe is good, to the US fine for video calls. 4G covers the whole city and 5G reaches the central areas; mobile data is nearly free compared with Spain or the US. Blackouts: rare, not a factor here. The real trap is in-building wiring in older blocks — ask to see an actual speed test inside the flat before you sign, not the sticker on the router.
CoworkingCoworking
Be honest with yourself: there is basically no coworking scene here. Craiova has a big university and heavy industry (the Ford Otosan car plant, formerly Ford, is the major private employer), but that produces company offices, not open desks for freelancers. There have been coworking and hub attempts tied to the university and the small local IT scene, but they open and close — I won't hand you names I can't guarantee are still alive; check the month you arrive. If you find one, expect ≈US$70–120 a month. In practice people work from home (with that fiber, fair enough) or from downtown and mall cafés, which don't mind you camping with a laptop. If your job genuinely needs an office, budget for renting a small one — it's cheap.
This is where you want to be without a car — everything on foot, cafés, terraces, handsome buildings. The priciest part of town, which here still means cheap. Around Nicolae Romanescu Park and Bordei: the park is huge and genuinely beautiful (one of Romania's best), and the streets around it are quiet, green, good for running. Brazda lui Novac: residential blocks to the north, well served by tram, supermarkets and markets close by; the best price-to-comfort balance for a multi-month stay. Rovine and Craioviţa Nouă: the big communist-era block districts, the cheapest rents in town, very local, no English in daily life; Craioviţa is a fair way out. The few foreigners here split between the center (international medical students) and quiet residential areas or nearby villages (industry engineers and managers).
ComunidadCommunity
No hay comunidad nómada. Punto. There is no nomad community. Full stop. What there is, is a living university city: the University of Craiova and the medical university bring international students (there are English- and French-taught programs), and the car industry keeps a steady foreign presence, a good share of it Turkish given who owns the plant. That's what you'll find — not remote-worker meetups. Daily language is Romanian, and outside the center and the under-30s don't count on English: markets, public offices and taxis run in Romanian or charades. Two pieces of good news if you come from the Spanish-speaking world: Romanian is a Romance language, so with two or three months of effort you'll understand a lot, and Oltenia sent enormous numbers of people to work in Spain and Italy, so you'll regularly meet locals with decent Spanish or Italian. Making friends is on you — gym, Romanian classes, the university, local football — because no expat circuit is going to adopt you.
Four friend-level warnings. One: Romania is now fully in Schengen (land borders since January 2025), so if you're non-EU your days here burn against the 90/180 Schengen allowance — the cheap reset is over. Romania does have a digital nomad visa, but it demands high income (several times the Romanian average wage; check the current figure, it rises every year) and a slow process with the immigration authority. Two: the weather bites at both ends. Oltenia is among the hottest parts of Romania, and July and August bring runs of 35–40 °C in a concrete city where older flats often have no AC; winter is cold, grey and foggy, and air quality drops during heating season. Always ask whether a flat has its own gas boiler ("centrală proprie") or depends on city district heating, which in Craiova has been troublesome — it changes both your bill and your comfort. Three: prices are not what they were three years ago. Romania raised its standard VAT in 2025 and power bills jumped when the price cap ended, so old blog numbers now run low; budget with margin. Four: weak physical connectivity and informal leases. Craiova's airport has few routes and many are seasonal, so a lot of trips end up as train or bus to Bucharest (three hours plus, more on a slow train). And on rentals, plenty of contracts are never registered with the tax office — if you need proof of address for a visa, insist on a properly registered contract before you pay the deposit.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
