Coatzacoalcos sits in southern Veracruz, right where the river of the same name empties into the Gulf of Mexico. It's the industrial heart of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec —Mexico's narrowest strip, between the Gulf and the Pacific— and it runs on oil and petrochemicals, with Pemex setting the city's rhythm. The heat is humid almost year-round. This isn't a postcard town: it's a working port, with a riverfront malecón, brown-sand beaches, and the well-known submerged tunnel that crosses under the water toward Villa Allende.
Mejor épocaBest time
Hot, humid tropics year-round. Rains and 'nortes' run June–October; the drier, slightly cooler months from December to April are the most bearable.
PresupuestoBudget
Ciudad industrial mexicana, no turística: precios locales. A Mexican industrial city, not a tourist one: local prices. Food and transport are cheap; lodging is pushed up by oil-worker demand rather than tourism.
EntradaEntry
Mexico waives visas for most Western nationalities for tourist stays; you enter with the standard migration registration. Check your own passport's rules.
Taxis and shared 'colectivos' are the practical option; the city spreads from the center and malecón toward the northern zone. The submerged tunnel and the bridge link the river's two banks.
