Ciutat Vella is Barcelona's historic district: the Gòtic with the cathedral and its medieval lanes, the gritty multicultural Raval with MACBA, El Born with Santa Maria del Mar and the Picasso Museum, and Barceloneta with its beach. Everything is walkable and everything is packed — this is the city's most crowded zone, with La Rambla and the Boqueria at its epicenter. Absolutely worth it, but go early in the morning, watch your bag, and steer clear of menus with photos.
Mejor épocaBest time to visit
May-June and September-October: good weather and slightly thinner crowds. In peak summer the old town saturates and humidity bites; in winter it's a wonderful place to wander.
PresupuestoBudget
Among Spain's priciest: sleeping in Ciutat Vella carries a clear tourist premium. Eating well and cheaply means walking two streets off La Rambla; neighborhood vermouth and bravas remain affordable.
Entrada y visaEntry and visa
Spain is in Schengen: EU citizens enter with an ID card and many nationalities (including the US, UK and much of Latin America) get 90 visa-free days. Carry a passport with enough validity.
The whole district is walkable; metro lines L3 and L4 skirt it (Liceu, Jaume I, Barceloneta). Stay sharp about pickpockets on La Rambla, in the metro and at café terraces.

The definitive Catalan Gothic basilica, raised by the people of La Ribera in the 14th century. A sober, luminous interior many prefer to the cathedral itself.
The historic market on La Rambla: fruit, ham and seafood stalls amid rivers of tourists. Go early, skip the overpriced juices, and eat at the counters toward the back.
Museu Picasso
Reserva online sí o sí.Five medieval palaces on Carrer Montcada hold the best collection of Picasso's formative years, with his Las Meninas series as the showstopper. Dónde poner tu base en Ciutat Vella, por barrio:Where to base yourself in Ciutat Vella, by neighborhood:
The medieval heart: the cathedral, Plaça Sant Felip Neri, Plaça Reial and a maze of alleys. Touristy to the extreme, but at dawn it gets all its magic back.
The most mixed and contradictory quarter: MACBA and its skater plaza, Rambla del Raval with Botero's cat, bookshops, old bars and corners that call for street smarts.
Between Santa Maria del Mar and the Born market hall: boutiques, cocktail bars, the Picasso Museum on Carrer Montcada and Ciutadella park a step away. The old town's friendliest face.
