Chillán
Aprox. 150,396 habitantesApprox. 150,396 people
Clima mediterráneo: verano seco y caluroso, invierno lluvioso.Chillán is the capital of Chile's Ñuble region, deep in the central valley, a land of farming, wine and good food. It's a mid-sized city that punches far above its weight culturally: independence hero Bernardo O'Higgins and pianist Claudio Arrau were born here, and singer-songwriter Violeta Parra just next door in San Carlos. Rebuilt after the devastating 1939 earthquake, it holds gems like the Escuela México, with murals by David Alfaro Siqueiros and Xavier Guerrero, Mexico's gift after the quake, and a modern cathedral engineered to withstand tremors. A short drive toward the Andes lie the hot springs and ski resort of Nevados de Chillán. Mediterranean climate: dry hot summers, wet winters.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Chillán?How much do you need per month in Chillán?
Chillán is a small Chilean provincial city: cheap by Chilean standards, expensive by Latin American ones, with very good internet and zero nomad scene. It works if you actually want southern Chile — the produce market, the volcanoes, skiing an hour and a half away, living in Spanish all day — and you don't mind working alone from your apartment. It doesn't work if you need a coworking full of people, English on the street, or a breathable winter: from May to August Chillán ranks among the worst air quality in Chile because of wood-stove smoke.

It's the best thing Chillán has going. Chile has some of the highest fiber penetration in Latin America and it lands here the same as in Santiago: 400–600 Mbps home plans for ≈US$22–28 a month, with Mundo, Entel, Movistar and Claro fighting over your block. Genuinely stable for all-day video calls. Mobile 4G covers the city well and, as a regional capital, there's 5G in parts of downtown and around it — don't count on even coverage citywide. The weak spot is winter: wind and rain storms knock out power for hours in some sectors, and no power means no router. If your job can't go dark, keep a mobile plan with hotspot as backup and a charged laptop battery.
CoworkingCoworking
There's basically no scene. Chillán isn't a remote-work city, and I'm not going to invent names of spaces that may already have closed — they open and shut. The closest thing to an ecosystem is the university one: Universidad del Bío-Bío and Universidad de Concepción's Chillán campus, so whatever coworking or incubator exists tends to orbit those. If you do find a fixed desk, budget ≈US$110–160 a month, but confirm on arrival because supply is thin. The normal move here is working from home and going out to a downtown café for a change of scenery — with the caveat that many neighborhood cafés aren't built for you to camp four hours on one coffee.
Centro, the grid around the Plaza de Armas, is the best bet if you don't have a car: you walk everywhere, the Mercado and the Feria are right there, and the newer apartment buildings are downtown; the trade-off is that some blocks near the bus terminal and the market get rough at night. The eastern side, up the Camino a las Termas, is the quietest and newest (gated developments, houses), but you depend on a shared taxi or your own car. Chillán Viejo, the adjoining comuna to the south, is cheaper, residential and quiet, still ten minutes from the center. And along Avenida Vicente Méndez, near UdeC's Chillán campus, there's cheap student-grade housing: affordable, young crowd, no frills.
ComunidadCommunity
Straight up: there's no nomad community here. No tech meetups, no English-speaking expat group, nobody to complain about the wifi with in a coworking. What there is: a Latin American migrant community — mostly Venezuelan and Colombian, the largest groups in Chile — with its own shops and networks, plus a big university population that gives the city some life during term. Daily life is 100% in Spanish, and provincial Chilean Spanish is fast and packed with slang: if your Spanish is intermediate, expect to ask people to repeat themselves for the first few months. You meet people at the gym, through sport, at the university, or heading up to the Nevados on weekends — not at events.
Winter is the real issue. From May to August it rains hard, it's a damp cold with frosts, and the city fills with wood-stove smoke: Chillán is under an official air-decontamination plan, with critical-episode days that restrict wood burning. If you have asthma or small kids, think twice. Heating also eats your budget in those months. Summer is the other extreme: January and February are dry and hot, highs around and above 30–35 °C, and half of Chillán leaves for the coast. Second issue: renting as a foreigner. Landlords will ask for a Chilean RUT, pay slips and often a Chilean guarantor, plus a month's deposit; without that you're stuck subletting or paying several months up front. Third: Chile has no digital nomad visa, and under the current migration law (Ley 21.325) you generally can't switch from tourist to resident status while inside the country — it's done at a consulate before you travel. Confirm directly with a Chilean consulate, these rules keep shifting. Fourth, a practical one: everything here is priced in Chilean pesos and UF; these dollar figures move on their own when the peso moves, so treat them as orders of magnitude, not quotes. Finally, this is earthquake country: the 1939 quake flattened Chillán (which is why the center is all 1940s architecture) and 2010 hit the region hard. Not a reason to stay away, just know what to do.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
