This is the source of a huge overseas-Chinese diaspora across Southeast Asia, and the city is shorthand for Chaoshan gongfu tea and a revered Teochew cuisine: braised goose, seafood, congee and beef hotpot. It's a place of living history rather than skyscrapers.
