Braunschweig (Brunswick in English) is a historic city in Lower Saxony, northern Germany. In the Middle Ages it was a Hanseatic power under Henry the Lion, the 12th-century duke who set a bronze lion in the castle square as a symbol of his might: the Burglöwe still stands there. World War II flattened much of the old town, but the medieval Magni quarter, the cathedral and an excellent art museum survive. Today it's a quiet university and engineering city, well connected to the rest of Germany.
