Bonn

Aprox. 313,125 habitantesApprox. 313,125 people

Bonn was the capital of West Germany from 1949 to 1990 and remains a second seat of the federal government, plus a UN city and home to giants like Deutsche Post DHL and Deutsche Telekom. On the banks of the Rhine, it's Beethoven's birthplace: his childhood home is now a museum. It has a first-rate Museum Mile, a compact old town around the minster (Bonner Münster) and, in spring, the famous cherry blossoms of Heerstraße.

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Bonn? How much do you need per month in Bonn?

Bonn works if what you want is orderly quality of life: a small city on the Rhine, green, extremely safe, with a UN campus, the Telekom and DHL headquarters and a huge university, so there are genuinely international people around and you won't feel like the only foreigner. It's not a nomad hub and doesn't try to be: the coworking scene is small, nightlife ends early, and Germany has no digital nomad visa, so the paperwork (visa, Anmeldung, mandatory health insurance) is the real bottleneck, not money. If you're after cheap, sunny, or a nomad crowd that turns over every week, this isn't your city; if you want a stable European base, trains everywhere and quiet to work in, it fits very well.

Fiber to the apartment (FTTH) isn't everywhere: Telekom is headquartered here and keeps rolling it out, but plenty of buildings still run VDSL or Vodafone cable. Download is fine — 100 to 250 Mbps is normal, more on cable — but upload is the weak spot: usually 10-40 Mbps unless you land real fiber, and you feel it on long video calls and big uploads. In exchange it's genuinely stable: no outages, the power doesn't go out. 5G in the city works well and a prepaid SIM with 10-20 GB runs ≈US$12-18 a month; on the train to Cologne or Frankfurt the signal drops in patches, a German classic. Watch the home contracts: the typical minimum term is 24 months, so if you're staying a few months look for a furnished flat with internet included.

CoworkingCoworking

Small, quiet scene: a handful of spaces, tied more to the city's startup, UN and international-cooperation crowd than to passing nomads. A flex desk runs ≈US$200-270 a month, a fixed desk a bit more; most are independent spaces, not global chains, so it's worth visiting rather than booking blind. Working from cafés is possible but less common than in southern Europe: Germans do it rarely, outlets aren't a given, and some places will side-eye you for holding a table three hours on one ≈US$4 coffee. The university and municipal libraries are free, quiet fallbacks. The real move: Cologne is 20-30 minutes away on a regional train with a much bigger coworking scene, and with the Deutschlandticket going there costs you nothing extra.

Prettiest and priciest. Poppelsdorf is the quiet favorite: student-heavy, with the palace and botanical garden, university institutes, better value than Südstadt and everything walkable. Altstadt/Nordstadt, just north of the center, is the youngest and most mixed: bars, university people, slightly more affordable rents. Beuel, across the Rhine, gets you more square meters for the same money, tram and bridge into town, and views back at the old town; more neighborhood than scene. Endenich is the cultural pick: theater, live music, an alternative streak, a bit cheaper. Bad Godesberg is where the diplomatic world, the international organizations and the foreign schools sit, but it's south, statelier and duller if you're in your thirties.

ComunidadCommunity

More international than its size suggests: the UN campus hosts around twenty organizations, Telekom and DHL are headquartered here, and the university has tens of thousands of students, many from abroad. In those circles English works fine. Outside them — landlord, Bürgeramt, doctor, neighbor — daily life runs in German, and speaking none will cost you. Meetups exist but are few and small; for big events, a tech crowd and real nights out, people take the train to Cologne. There are Spanish speakers (students, scholarship holders, people at international and development organizations), but scattered: don't expect a compact Latino scene like Berlin or Munich. Locals are friendly but slow to make friends; the fast lane is a German course, a Sportverein or the coworking.

Germany has no digital nomad visa, and that's the point that sinks plans. As a tourist you get 90 days in 180 in Schengen, and working remotely on that stamp is a gray zone. A freelance permit (Freiberufler) exists, but it's built for people invoicing German clients, and Bonn's immigration office sees it far less often than Berlin's. The detail almost nobody tells you: if you're from the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Israel or the UK you can apply for the permit while already here; most other nationalities have to get a national visa from their home country BEFORE coming. Get advice, don't improvise on arrival. Second: the Anmeldung. You register your address within the first two weeks and you need the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung signed by your landlord; many furnished sublets won't give it, and without registration there's no bank account, no tax number, no contract for anything. Ask BEFORE you pay the deposit. Unfurnished flats come literally without a kitchen and the deposit is 3 months' cold rent. Health insurance is mandatory for the permit and is NOT included in the budgets above: add ≈US$120-200 a month for an expat private plan, considerably more if you end up in the public system as a freelancer. And the Rundfunkbeitrag: ≈US$20 a month per household, mandatory even without a TV, and the bill finds you right after the Anmeldung. On weather: gray and rainy, and in December it's dark by about 4:30pm — that breaks more people than the cold. Sundays everything is closed, no exceptions. And Bonn is genuinely quiet: if you need nightlife, that's Cologne (and in February the Rhineland Karneval shuts the city down for a week here too). Safety: very high; the main station area feels uncomfortable at night, but nothing like a big city.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person.
