After its collieries closed it reinvented itself: today it's a university city (the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, one of the country's biggest), home to the German Mining Museum (Deutsches Bergbau-Museum) and the Starlight Express musical, running since 1988. Its bar district, the Bermudadreieck, holds the nightlife, and from here you can ride the whole Ruhr by train.
