Bilbao folds between hills around the Nervión-Ibaizabal estuary, axis of both its industrial past and cultural reinvention. The old merchant town, working-class districts and contemporary architecture connect through metro, tram and river walks; frequent rain helps explain the green setting. Useful areas for orientation are Casco Viejo, Bilbao La Vieja, Indautxu; the main landmarks are Guggenheim Bilbao, Mercado de la Ribera, Funicular de Artxanda.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Bilbao? How much do you need per month in Bilbao?
Bilbao works if you want a calm, green, extremely walkable European base with some of the best food on the continent and none of Barcelona's tourist circus. It's cheaper than Madrid or Barcelona, but it isn't cheap anymore: the rental market is tight, and landing a flat as a foreigner without a Spanish payslip is the genuinely hard part. It is not a nomad hub — few people passing through, a local social life, and real rain — so if you need sun, beach weather year-round and a big nomad scene, look elsewhere.

Genuinely among the best in Europe: Spain has one of the continent's widest fiber-to-the-home footprints and Bilbao is well covered. Almost any flat can get 300 Mb to 1 Gb symmetric for ≈US$35–45 a month, and it actually delivers — video calls and heavy uploads are a non-issue. 5G works well across the city and the metro has mobile coverage on most of the network (don't assume every tunnel). A data-heavy SIM runs ≈US$12–18/month with the budget carriers. Power cuts are very rare: the April 2025 Iberian blackout was an exceptional event, not the norm. The weak spot is outside the city — mobile signal drops off fast in Bizkaia's valleys and mountain villages, so if you're thinking of living outside the metro area, ask about coverage before you sign.
CoworkingCoworking
Small scene, but a serious one. Bilbao has spent years building its startup ecosystem: Zorrotzaurre island is the city's innovation district (home to the Bilbao Berrikuntza Faktoria, which is more an entrepreneurship and training center than a classic coworking), and much of Basque tech employment sits in the Zamudio technology park just outside town. There are several coworking spaces around the Ensanche and Zorrotzaurre; a flexible hot desk runs ≈US$150–190 a month, a private office considerably more. Go see them before you pay — the lineup shifts and there's no dominant brand you can book blind from abroad. Don't expect the Lisbon or Medellín vibe: most people in the room work for Basque companies rather than passing through, so networking is local rather than international. Plenty of people just work from cafés — there are lots with outlets and good wifi, though the bars fill up and get loud around pintxo hour.
Indautxu is the default pick: the modern grid, wide streets, cafés, gyms, supermarkets, everything on foot. Abando is just as central and the best connected (train stations, metro, airport in ~20-25 minutes by bus), slightly more formal and pricier. Casco Viejo has the soul and the pintxos, older flats somewhat cheaper than Abando, but also the noise and the tourism — if you're a light sleeper, don't live above a bar street. Deusto, across the river, is the university side: more affordable, with its own life, ~15-20 minutes' walk from the center. Santutxu and Basurto are living-in neighborhoods — no postcard views, but saner prices. And if you want the sea, Getxo (Algorta, Las Arenas, Neguri) is ~25-30 minutes by metro, at good-neighborhood prices but with beach and quiet.
ComunidadCommunity
Daily life happens in Spanish; Basque is on the signage, in schools and in part of the cultural life, but nobody expects you to speak it. English works in tourist settings and falls apart in admin ones (banks, letting agencies, city hall — go in Spanish). People are direct and warm, but Basque social life revolves around the cuadrilla, the lifelong friend group, and breaking into that from outside is harder than in Madrid or Valencia. There are tech meetups, running, climbing, hiking and surf groups, and a real Latin American community — though more people who live here than nomads passing through. The fast route to meeting people: commit to something weekly (a language school, a gym, a mountaineering club) instead of waiting for it to happen at a bar.
Lo que nadie te diceWhat nobody tells you
Tres advertencias. Three warnings. One: it rains, and not a little — the sirimiri, that fine constant drizzle, can last for days, and winters are grey and damp though not very cold. If weather affects your mood, visit in November first, not July. Two: the rental market is the nightmare. Supply is short, agencies want a Spanish payslip, a stable contract and often a guarantor or several months' deposit, and a foreigner with remote income gets filtered out without a second look. Book temporary housing for your first month and hunt in person; searching from abroad is how you get scammed. Three, paperwork: with a non-EU passport the tourist stamp is Schengen 90/180 and won't let you live here. Spain has had an international teleworker (digital nomad) visa since the late-2022 startups law, but it requires high, documented income — the minimum is pegged to the Spanish minimum wage and updated yearly, so confirm the current figure with the consulate before you count on it. Smaller but real: Loiu airport has a decent European network but almost no long-haul, so intercontinental trips usually connect through Madrid; during Aste Nagusia (the big August festival, starting the Saturday after the 15th) the Casco Viejo does not sleep; part of the city shuts down in August; and although Bilbao is one of Spain's safer cities, San Francisco and Bilbao La Vieja — trendy and fine by day — are still the areas locals will tell you not to wander alone at 3am.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
