Baku is the largest capital in the Caucasus and the only major city on the Caspian Sea, that inland sea that has meant oil here for over a century. The money shows: futuristic skyscrapers like the Flame Towers, Zaha Hadid architecture and an immaculate seaside promenade sit next to a walled old town of medieval alleys. It's so windy they call it 'the city of winds.' It's a strange, fascinating mix of Persian, Russian, Turkish and petro-modernity, still surprisingly untouristed for its size.

Mejor épocaBest time

Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) are best. Summer is hot and very windy by the Caspian; winter is cold and damp with a cutting wind.

PresupuestoBudget

Cheaper than Western Europe but not a bargain; the tourist center inflates prices. A moderate traveler manages $40-70/day. Currency: Azerbaijani manat.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Baku? How much do you need per month in Baku?

Baku works if you want a cheap, street-safe base with a strange mix of Caucasus, Persia and oil money, and you don't mind being off the nomad circuit. Two things help: the manat has been pegged to the dollar for years (≈1.70 AZN to US$1), so your budget doesn't swing month to month, and the center is genuinely walkable. It doesn't work if you need a big nomad community, flawless internet, or a long stay without paperwork fights: the scene is small, fiber upload is weak, and the country blocks sites and social networks whenever it feels like it.

Home fiber in the center is usually sold as 50–100 Mbps for ≈US$15–25 a month, but you'll get less than advertised and upload is weak: fine for video calls, painful for uploading heavy video. Older buildings sometimes only get slow cable or DSL — ask which provider actually reaches the flat BEFORE you sign, not after. All of the country's international traffic runs through very few wholesale carriers, so latency to European or American servers is worse than the speed test suggests. Mobile 4G in Baku is solid and works as a backup; 5G exists but coverage is limited to parts of the center. The thing that really matters: Azerbaijan restricts the internet at will. Several independent outlets have been blocked for years, TikTok was blocked in 2023, and during military escalations social media has been throttled or cut nationwide. Have a VPN installed and paid for before you land, plus a mobile-data hotspot as plan B. Power cuts aren't an issue in Baku.

CoworkingCoworking

The scene is small and volatile: a handful of spaces in Nasimi and around Sahil, plus a few inside the newer office towers. Monthly hot desks run ≈US$100–170 and day passes ≈US$8–15, based on what people passing through report — the range is wide on purpose. I won't name them, because they open and close often and I'd rather not send you to a dead address: look them up on Google Maps once you're there and call before showing up. A lot of people just work from cafés — the center has a decent specialty-coffee scene and usable wifi, but few outlets and real noise at lunchtime. Staying for months? Negotiate the monthly rate at the front desk; there's usually an unpublished discount.

Sahil / Fountain Square and Nizami street, in Sabail district: the walkable heart — cafés, metro, and the Caspian boulevard two blocks away. Priciest, and the easiest landing pad for your first weeks. Nasimi (around 28 May): central, very well connected, a mix of Soviet blocks and new builds; the best price-to-location ratio in the city. Yasamal: genuinely residential, cheaper, on the metro (Elmlər Akademiyası, İnşaatçılar) with real neighborhood life; where you cut rent without going into exile. Ağ Şəhər (White City): new development east of the center, modern and clean buildings, more expensive and with less street life; good if you value a new flat over walking everywhere. Skip: İçərişəhər (the walled Old City) is beautiful to visit but touristy, old and noisy — a bad call for a multi-month stay.

ComunidadCommunity

Comunidad hispanohablante prácticamente no existe. Brace yourself: the nomad community is tiny. The foreigners here are mostly oil and gas people, Turkish business, and students — not laptop folks. Meetups exist but are few and far between; you won't walk into a coworking and meet twenty people the way you would in Tbilisi or Istanbul. Language: Azerbaijani everywhere, Russian widely spoken (especially older people and in business), English among younger people downtown — outside that, gestures and a translator app. A Spanish-speaking community basically doesn't exist. Azerbaijani hospitality is real and warm, but going from "they offered me tea" to having friends takes time. Trick: Tbilisi is a bit over an hour away by air, so many people use Baku as a quiet base and fly out to socialize — fly, though: Azerbaijan's land borders have been closed to tourists much of the time since 2020, so check the current status before planning to go overland.

Four things that can wreck your month. One, your phone: if you use a local SIM, your foreign handset gets blocked after roughly 30 days unless you register its IMEI with the authorities (paperwork plus a state fee, on the order of ≈US$60). Most people find out once their line is already dead — handle it in week one. Two, immigration: there's no digital nomad visa; almost everyone enters on the 30-day ASAN e-visa, and extending it is bureaucratic. On top of that, staying over 15 days means registering your address with the State Migration Service — a hotel does it for you, but with an informal rental you have to make sure the landlord actually files it. Three, rent: informal contracts, cash in manat, one month deposit, and a foreigner markup if you show up cold — compare against local listings or use an agent before accepting the first number. Four, Formula 1: the Grand Prix runs on a street circuit through the center, and during race days the Old City and the boulevard shut down, traffic seizes up, and accommodation prices spike. If your arrival lands there, either lean into it or dodge it — just don't be surprised. Beyond that: this is an authoritarian country, so keep political opinions off social media and don't photograph military or government facilities; and if you have a record of entering Nagorno-Karabakh without Azerbaijani permission, you can be denied entry. The weather bites — they call it the city of winds for a reason: strong wind most of the year, summers past 35°C and humid by the Caspian, mild but raw winters thanks to that wind. Street safety is genuinely good, including at night. Get around with ride apps (Bolt operates in Baku); the purple taxis that pick you up on the street will overcharge you unless you agree on a price first.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
