It's a city with a Central European feel, with broad boulevards and neoclassical and Secession-style architecture inherited from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Its great monument is the Arad Citadel, an 18th-century star fortress. Once an important industrial and railway hub, it's now a comfortable stop between Timișoara and the Hungarian border, with trams, cafés and a pleasant pedestrian center.
