Antsirabe

Aprox. 186,253 habitantesApprox. 186,253 people

Antsirabe is Madagascar's highland city, at about 1,500 m in the Vakinankaratra region, south of Antananarivo along the RN7 road. Its name means "where there is much salt," for the thermal springs that made it a colonial spa town, built up by Norwegian missionaries. Today it's known for its pousse-pousse —hand-pulled rickshaws that fill the streets—, its cool mountain climate, and its craft trade in gemstones and miniatures.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Antsirabe? How much do you need per month in Antsirabe?

Antsirabe is one of the cheapest bases on the planet: Madagascar's highlands at ~1,500 m, cool year-round, slow-paced, with a wide-avenue colonial center full of pousse-pousse rickshaws. It works if your job tolerates power cuts, you speak French, and "good enough" internet is a fair trade for living on very little. It does not work if you need rock-solid connectivity, a nomad community, or real healthcare: there's no remote scene here, no true coworking, and anything medically serious gets handled in Antananarivo or abroad.

Madagascar is better connected than people assume: several submarine cables land here and Telma sells residential fiber in the main cities, Antsirabe included, mostly downtown. Entry plans are typically advertised in the tens of megabits, but what actually arrives depends on the hour and on your street — before you sign a lease, ask whether that specific house already has fiber pulled, because installation can take weeks. The real problem isn't bandwidth, it's power: JIRAMA outages (the infamous "délestage") are frequent and long, and no power means no router. If you're working seriously, budget for a battery/inverter or stay somewhere with a generator. On mobile, Telma, Orange and Airtel give decent 4G in town and data is cheap — keep a backup SIM from a second carrier so you can tether when the fixed line dies. Starlink has reached the country and is a genuine plan B for some remote workers, but confirm availability, current price and the hassle of importing the kit before you count on it.

CoworkingCoworking

Straight answer: Antsirabe has no coworking in the sense you're used to. No monthly-membership space, no call booths, no freelancer community. What exists is hotel lobbies, a few downtown cafés, and your own place. The practical move for people working remotely here is to negotiate a monthly rate with a downtown hotel that has its own generator and wifi, or build a home desk with an inverter. The country's coworking and tech-hub ecosystem lives in Antananarivo, three or four hours away by taxi-brousse — if you need a real space several times a month, Tana is your base, not Antsirabe.

Foreigners here cluster in the colonial center, on and around Avenue de l'Indépendance: that's where the fiber, banks, restaurants and big French-era houses are, and it's the most walkable part of town. The thermal quarter, next to the Hôtel des Thermes and the baths, is the greenest and quietest — old houses with gardens, the city's "expensive" option and still cheap by your standards. Antsenakely, the market district, is the cheapest and liveliest, but also the noisiest and dustiest: fine if you like the bustle, bad if you're on calls all day. West of town, toward Lake Andraikiba, you'll find houses with land and a countryside feel, but you'll depend on a moto or taxi for everything.

ComunidadCommunity

There's no nomad community here: no remote-work meetups, no cafés full of laptops. The foreigners who are here are a different crowd — missionaries (Antsirabe was founded by Norwegian Lutheran missionaries in 1872 and that presence continues), NGO workers, a few long-settled French, and Indo-Pakistani and Chinese traders. They know each other and you get in by introduction, not by app. Day-to-day language is Malagasy; French gets you through almost everything with educated people, shops and officialdom, and without French you'll be fairly isolated. English, not much. Spanish-speaking community: essentially zero — Spanish is useless here. Malagasy people are warm and easy to deal with, but real friendships take time and go through language.

Three things a friend would tell you before you book. One: power and water are the country's structural problem, not a bad week — JIRAMA outages are exactly what triggered the mass protests of 2025 and that October's change of government, and Madagascar is still in a political transition; check where things stand today and read your government's travel advisory BEFORE you move, not after. Two: healthcare. Antsirabe has basic clinics; anything serious goes to Antananarivo and anything truly serious gets evacuated to Réunion or South Africa. Get insurance WITH medical evacuation — non-negotiable. Three: it's a cash economy. ATMs are few and sometimes out of notes, plenty of businesses don't take cards, and the ariary keeps depreciating, so every dollar figure above moves — treat them as orders of magnitude, not a precise budget, and confirm prices on arrival; mobile money (MVola, Orange Money) is widespread and will genuinely help. Then the details that bite: June through August the nights are properly cold (Antsirabe is one of the country's coldest cities) and houses have no heating — bring warm clothes; December to March it rains hard and the RN7 slows to a crawl. Don't walk alone at night, especially near the market. And there's no digital nomad visa: you enter on a paid tourist visa (up to 90 days) and extending is a real bureaucratic errand, so plan it before you arrive. Last, brace yourself emotionally: Madagascar is one of the poorest countries on earth, and the gap between what you spend and what the people around you earn is enormous and visible every day.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
