Its climate is surprisingly cool for a tropical island, with chilly winters from May to September. It's a city of steep staircases, brick houses with wooden balconies and rice paddies reaching the urban edge. It usually serves as the gateway before heading down to beaches or lemur parks, more than a destination in itself.
Mejor épocaBest time
The cool dry season, April to October, is best for getting around the country; nights in the capital can be cold. Rains (and cyclone risk on the coast) run November to March.

In the city, taxis (old Renaults and Citroëns) and taxi-be (minibuses) are common. Traffic is slow and the hills steep; countrywide, taxi-brousse minibuses link the regions.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Antananarivo (Tana)? How much do you need per month in Antananarivo (Tana)?
Si igual vas, ve con contrato, ingreso en divisas y una razón específica, no a "probar tres meses".Tana isn't a nomad base, and it's worth saying so up front: the foreigners living there are there for a specific job — aid and NGOs, embassies, mining (Ambatovy, QMM), vanilla and lychee trade, missionary work, conservation research, French-language call centers, or a Malagasy-French family — not because they picked a cheap place to work remotely. In local currency the city is dirt cheap and genuinely fascinating, but the power goes out for hours most days, serious medical care means evacuation to Réunion, Mauritius or South Africa, everything runs in French and Malagasy, and since the political upheaval of October 2025 the country has been under a military-led transition. There's no sanctions regime to break your cards or your banking: the problem is a different one — infrastructure, health and political uncertainty. If you go anyway, go with a contract, hard-currency income and a specific reason, not to "try it for three months".

Surprise: bandwidth isn't the worst problem. Madagascar is connected to the region by submarine cable and Telma sells home fiber in Tana — in practice expect something on the order of ≈10-50 Mbps down for ≈US$25-55/month, with noticeably weaker upload; faster plans exist, but they cost more and not every building is wired. That it works is proven by an entire French-language call-center and BPO industry running on that connection. The problem is electricity: JIRAMA's scheduled and unscheduled cuts happen most days and can run several hours straight, with bad stretches where you lose a good chunk of the working day. Without an inverter or generator your fiber is decoration. Mobile: Telma, Orange and Airtel cover the capital well with usable 4G and cheap data, but coverage degrades fast outside Tana. There's no systematic censorship, though during the 2025 protests temporary network and social-media restrictions were reported — it can happen again, so install a VPN before you need one.
CoworkingCoworking
The scene is minimal and aimed at Malagasy founders, not passing nomads. Habaka, Tana's long-running tech hub, is the name you'll hear most, and there's an Orange Digital Center; both work more as incubator and tech community than as walk-in, pay-by-the-day coworking, and membership availability comes and goes — ask before you count on it. There's no Bali- or Medellín-style ecosystem here, not remotely. Most foreigners working online just set up at home with their own inverter, or camp in cafés and hotel lobbies in Ankorondrano and Isoraka for ≈US$3-6 an afternoon. Budget ≈US$40-120/month if you do find a space, but go in knowing pricing isn't standardized. What you're really buying when you pay for a spot here isn't a desk: it's stable power.
Ivandry — embassy and agency territory, gated houses with a guard, near the international schools; expensive by Tana standards and where almost everyone arriving on a contract ends up. Ambatobe — up in the hills, quiet, family-oriented, orbiting the French lycée; better views and better air, but you'll need a car. Ankorondrano — the "modern" strip of offices, malls and hotels; handy for wifi, banks and paperwork, ugly to actually live in. Isoraka and the Haute Ville (Faravohitra, Andohalo) — the old colonial core, restaurants and walkable life, the option with the most soul for a short stay, but steep streets, aging buildings and less safety after dark. In all four, the real deciding factor isn't the neighborhood but the traffic: twenty minutes on the map can be an hour at six in the evening.
ComunidadCommunity
There is no nomad community. There's an expat community, which is a different animal: overwhelmingly French-speaking and organized around work — aid, embassies, NGOs, mining, agribusiness — plus the Karana business community and missionaries from several churches. You meet people through the schools (French lycée, American school), the Institut Français de Madagascar, sports and dinners at people's homes, not at open coworking events. If you speak French you're in quickly and people are hospitable; if you only have English you'll orbit a small circle and feel fairly isolated. The young Malagasy tech scene is real and worth finding, but it's local, it runs in Malagasy and French, and you have to go looking for it.
Three things can wreck your plan, in order. One: health. Serious medical care in Tana is limited, and for anything major the standard move is evacuation to Réunion, Mauritius or South Africa — get insurance with medical evacuation or don't come; plague is also endemic in the highlands with seasonal outbreaks (Tana's altitude does protect you well from malaria; the coast doesn't at all). Two: power and water. JIRAMA's outages are the number one reason remote work here becomes unsustainable, and they were the trigger for the 2025 protests. Three: politics. After the government fell in October 2025 the country entered a military-led transition and the African Union suspended Madagascar; there were curfews, and they can come back. My information only runs so far: check the current situation, your foreign ministry's advisories, and whether immigration rules still hold before you commit to anything. Add the practical layer: daily life runs on ariary cash and mobile money (MVola, Orange Money), cards are rarely accepted and ATM limits are low; don't walk around Tana after dark or with your phone out, muggings are common, and don't get drawn into street incidents; traffic is brutal; flights in and out are few and expensive, and the national airline has been unstable for years; and without functional French, ordinary life gets genuinely hard. There is no digital nomad visa: you arrive on a short-stay tourist visa and anything longer runs through employer sponsorship or a local structure — confirm current visa types, durations and fees with the consulate, they change.
