Annaba

Aprox. 206,570 habitantesApprox. 206,570 people

Annaba (colonial-era Bône) is a port city in Algeria's far northeast, on the Mediterranean near the Tunisian border. Its great treasure is history: beside the city lie the Roman ruins of Hippo Regius, where Saint Augustine lived and served as bishop, crowned today by the hilltop Basilica of Saint Augustine. It's a Mediterranean-climate city of beaches, a lively central promenade (the Cours de la Révolution) and heavy steel industry at El Hadjar. Algeria is still a little-traveled destination with demanding visa procedures, but of enormous historical weight.

Mejor épocaBest time

Spring and autumn are ideal; the Mediterranean summer is hot and beachy, winter mild and somewhat rainy.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Annaba? How much do you need per month in Annaba?

Annaba is dirt cheap and genuinely pretty — Mediterranean coast, the ruins of Hippo Regius, the mountain village of Seraïdi next door — but it is not a nomad base: there's no remote-work scene, no digital nomad visa, and the country runs almost entirely on cash. It works if you have a real reason to be in Algeria (family, a job with a local company, research, a strong pull toward the Maghreb without tourists) and you get by in Algerian Arabic or French; it doesn't work if you need to pull cash from an ATM with a foreign card, get paid through Stripe or PayPal, upload heavy video daily, or meet people at a coworking. One warning about the numbers on this page: Algeria has two very different exchange rates, official and parallel, so any dollar figure depends on which one you use. We're pricing at the parallel rate, the one you'll actually use if you arrive with euros in cash; at the official rate all of this costs you roughly double.

This is the weak spot. Fixed-line is an Algérie Télécom monopoly: the center has fiber (Idoom Fibre) with plans that on paper promise tens of Mbps, while older areas still run single-digit ADSL/VDSL. Algeria has long sat near the bottom of global fixed-speed rankings, and upload is the worst part — fine for video calls and email, painful for uploading video or running big backups. Mobile 4G from Djezzy, Ooredoo or Mobilis is reasonably good in the city and is the real plan B: tether from your phone. The concrete, documented part: every June, during the baccalaureate exams, the country cuts or throttles internet and social media for hours across several days (build slack into any June deadline), and some internet-calling apps can behave erratically depending on the moment. Assume you'll want a VPN, and never depend on a single connection.

CoworkingCoworking

There is no coworking scene here. Algiers has incubators and startup spaces; Annaba — industrial and university-driven — never developed an equivalent we can name with confidence, and we'd rather tell you that than invent one. What does exist is the Badji Mokhtar University orbit and its business incubator, which sometimes hosts local projects, plus downtown cafés with weak wifi. In practice you'll work from home on your own line with your phone as backup, so pick the apartment for its connection, not its view. If someone quotes you a monthly coworking price, confirm it in person: there's no established market with comparable rates.

Centre-ville, around the Cours de la Révolution: the colonial heart, cafés under the ficus trees, everything walkable, the obvious pick for an outsider. Saint-Cloud, up the slope to the west, quieter and more residential with better buildings. The beach strip to the east and north (Rizi Amor, Aïn Achir, Chapuis), where the middle class summers and where seasonal rentals show up — pricey in July and August, nearly free the rest of the year. And Seraïdi, the mountain village 12–15 km up the hill, cool and green, if you're fine commuting up and down. Actual foreigners are few: mostly technicians tied to the El Hadjar steel complex, the port and the fertilizer plant, plus African students at the university.

ComunidadCommunity

There's no nomad community and no remote-work meetups here — don't go looking. No Spanish-speaking community either. Social life is local and runs on introductions: know one family and you're in everything; otherwise you watch from outside. Daily life happens in Algerian Arabic (derja); French carries you through paperwork, shops, people over 40 and the university; English is growing among the young but don't count on it. Algerians tend to be extremely hospitable to a foreigner who makes an effort with the language, and that effort opens more doors here than in any nomad hub. One honest note: for a woman alone, café life — which is THE social life of the city — is a fairly male space.

Money is issue number one. Algeria is a cash economy: your foreign cards are basically useless, ATMs for foreign plastic are a headache, and there's no Stripe, no PayPal, no comfortable way to get paid from inside the country. Two very different exchange rates also coexist, official and parallel, so any dollar price — including the ones on this page, which are priced at the parallel rate — changes size depending on which you use: arrive with euros in cash and ask someone you trust how that's handled, because it shifts and it's a sensitive topic. Second: the visa. There's no digital nomad visa, nearly every nationality needs one arranged in advance with an invitation or hotel booking, extensions are pure bureaucracy, and a long stay means registering and applying for residency — don't show up planning to figure it out later. Third: renting for real means paying six months or a year up front, usually on a handshake with no registered contract, so never wire money before seeing the place. Fourth: the air. Annaba lives alongside the El Hadjar steel complex and a fertilizer plant; there are days of smell and poor air quality, and asthma will notice. Fifth, smaller but real: don't photograph the port, industrial installations, or anything that looks military or police — patience runs out fast there. Add humid winters among the rainiest in the country, hot sticky summers, alcohol that's hard to find and frowned upon in public, and a rhythm where Friday stops everything. None of this is dangerous: it's daily friction, and if you don't accept it going in, the city will wear you down.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
