Oran is western Algeria’s major port, set between the Mediterranean and Mount Aïdour. Spanish, Ottoman and French layers accompany the city associated with the birth of raï music. For orientation, Sidi El Houari —the historic quarter beneath Aïdour, with Ottoman and Spanish fabric and buildings under restoration— and Front de Mer —an elevated French-era boulevard with broad views over the harbor and Mediterranean— are two concrete areas. Verifiable anchors include Fort de Santa Cruz and Place du 1er Novembre.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Oran? How much do you need per month in Oran?

Funciona si hablas francés, llegas con euros en efectivo y no necesitas una escena que te valide; no funciona si quieres aterrizar, abrir la laptop y encontrar un coworking lleno de gente como tú.Oran is one of the cheapest bases on the Mediterranean — but only if you understand the currency game: nearly every figure here is priced at the dinar's parallel rate, and if you change money at a bank at the official rate you pay roughly 1.7 to 2 times more for exactly the same thing. The expensive part isn't money, it's friction: a visa you must arrange before you fly, a cash economy where your foreign card is close to useless, and internet cuts tied to the high-school exams that have landed in June several years running. It works if you speak French, arrive with euros in cash, and don't need a scene to validate you; it doesn't work if you want to land, open your laptop, and find a coworking full of people like you.

Fibre comes from Algérie Télécom under the Idoom brand; fixed lines are a state monopoly, so there's nowhere else to go. In covered areas (the centre, Bir El Djir, Es Seddikia) advertised plans reach 100 Mbps or more and in practice handle video calls fine, though real speeds vary a lot by building and time of day. Older neighbourhoods and the outskirts are still largely on ADSL, where upload is poor — sending large files will hurt. Watch the paperwork: the line is usually in the landlord's name and a new installation can take weeks, so negotiate "fibre already installed and working" before you sign, not after. On mobile, 4G from Djezzy, Mobilis and Ooredoo is solid and cheap across the city; 5G is only just being licensed nationally, so don't count on it. Power cuts aren't a routine part of life in Oran, though peak summer demand does bring occasional outages. And the thing nobody warns you about: during the June BAC exam days, the state has cut or throttled the internet nationwide during exam hours for several years running. The format has shifted year to year (sometimes a full cut, sometimes only social media) and I can't promise how it'll look this year — but if you have clients, check the BAC calendar before committing to deliverables that week, and keep mobile data and alternative call slots ready.

CoworkingCoworking

The scene is minimal, and I'll be blunt: don't count on it. There are a few spaces tied to incubators and the startup ecosystem, mostly around the science and technology university (USTO), but they open and close, and I won't give you names because I can't confirm which are still alive today — check on arrival by asking in local Facebook groups, which is where everything actually gets organised here. If you find one, budget somewhere around ≈US$60–120 a month, with the caveat that this is an estimate, not a price I can vouch for. The norm in Oran is working from home. There are thousands of cafés and they're dirt cheap, but they're social spaces: loud, patchy wifi, heavily male. Fine for an hour with headphones, not for an eight-hour day. Practical advice: spend your energy landing a flat with good fibre, not hunting for an office.

Centre and Front de Mer: the colonial core around Place du 1er Novembre — everything on foot, old buildings with equal parts charm and noise. Bir El Djir: the modern expansion to the east, newer buildings, better wiring, quieter, though you'll lean on the tram or taxis. Es Seddikia and Canastel: the well-off end, up on the cliffs with sea views, money and families back from abroad; you'll basically want a car. Aïn El Turk and Les Andalouses: the coast to the west, calm nine months of the year and packed and expensive in July and August. One fact that reorders the whole map: most foreigners in the region don't live in Oran city but in Arzew, some 40 km east, because of the gas and petrochemical complex.

ComunidadCommunity

No hay comunidad nómada. Punto, y no pasa nada. There is no nomad community. Full stop — and that's fine. The foreigners you'll meet are oil and gas engineers, Chinese and Turkish construction workers, a few students, and above all in summer the Algerian diaspora from France, who fill the city and change its energy for two months. Don't expect remote-work meetups or Slack groups. The good news is that Oran is genuinely easy socially: Algerian hospitality isn't a cliché, and within a couple of weeks someone will invite you home to eat. But it happens through personal introductions, not apps. French gets you through almost everything; the street language is Algerian darja heavily mixed with French, and English is scarce except among younger people. And Oran is the home of raï: nightlife and music are looser here than the national average — though it's still Algeria.

Three things can wreck your plan, and none of them is the price. One, the visa: Algeria has no nomad visa, most nationalities can't enter without one, and you apply at a consulate before flying — usually with an invitation letter or a hotel booking. Extensions from inside the country are a headache. Confirm the requirement for your passport with the consulate, and don't buy the flight before the visa is in it. Two, money: this is a cash economy. Your Visa or Mastercard is useless in most shops, the few ATMs that take foreign cards often reject them, and there's no PayPal or Stripe. Bring euros in banknotes, declare your currency at customs if you're carrying a serious amount, and keep the form. The gap between the official rate and the street parallel rate is huge — on the order of 1.7 to 2 times — and that gap is the whole difference between this being cheap or merely mediocre. It's an informal market, so use your head and go with someone you trust. Three, rent: landlords commonly want six months to a year up front, and foreigners get quoted foreigner prices; in summer, with the diaspora in town, the coast goes through the roof. The rest, briefly: the BAC internet cuts land in June; Ramadan reshuffles the city's hours for a whole month; alcohol is legal but sold in few places and drinking in public is badly frowned on; safety in Oran is ordinary big-city — pickpocketing downtown and in markets — and the serious travel warnings point at the Saharan south and the borders, not here; a woman alone will deal with a fair amount of verbal street harassment; and the climate is genuinely Mediterranean, humid summers around 30–33 °C and mild rainy winters, not Saharan hell.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
