Altay

Altay (Altái) está en el extremo norte de Xinjiang, en la esquina donde China toca Kazajistán, Rusia y Mongolia, al pie de las montañas Altái. Es un mundo aparte del resto de China: praderas, ríos de deshielo, bosques de coníferas y una cultura de pastores kazajos. La región presume de ser una de las cunas del esquí —hay pinturas rupestres antiguas de gente esquiando— y en invierno la nieve es larga y seca. Al norte queda el famoso lago Kanas, de aguas turquesa entre montañas. El río Irtysh (Ertix), el único de China que fluye hacia el Ártico, nace por aquí.Altay sits at the far north of Xinjiang, in the corner where China meets Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia, at the foot of the Altai Mountains. It's a world apart from the rest of China: grasslands, meltwater rivers, conifer forests and a Kazakh herding culture. The region claims to be one of the birthplaces of skiing —there are ancient rock paintings of people on skis— and winter snow is long and dry. To the north lies the famous Kanas Lake, turquoise water among the mountains. The Irtysh (Ertix) River, the only one in China that flows toward the Arctic, rises here.
