Aktau

Aprox. 147,443 habitantesApprox. 147,443 people

Aktau is a planned Soviet city on the Caspian Sea coast, capital of the Mangystau region, in the desert far west of Kazakhstan. It was founded in the 1960s around uranium mining and once ran on a nuclear reactor that also desalinated Caspian water, in a place with no rivers. It's famous for an urban oddity: its streets have no names, only numbers (numbered microdistricts and buildings). Today it lives off oil and gas, and is the gateway to the lunar landscapes of Mangystau.

Mejor épocaBest season

Mayo–junio y septiembre, templado. May–June and September, mild. Summer is very hot and dry, and winter is cold and windy over the Caspian.

PresupuestoBudget

Kazakhstan is affordable (tenge), though Aktau, as an oil city, runs a bit pricier than the country's interior.

EntradaEntry

Many nationalities enter Kazakhstan visa-free (up to 30 days). Confirm for your passport.

Del puerto salen ferris por el Caspio hacia Bakú (Azerbaiyán).The city is laid out in numbered microdistricts, disorienting at first; taxis are common. Ferries cross the Caspian from the port to Baku (Azerbaijan).

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Aktau? How much do you need per month in Aktau?

Aktau isn't a nomad base and it'd be dishonest to sell it as one: it's an oil town dropped into the desert on the Caspian shore, where the foreigners you meet are oil & gas contractors, not laptop people. It works if Mangystau genuinely pulls you — Bozzhyra, the canyons, the sea, the empty desert — and you can handle wind, dust and a treeless city built out of numbered microdistricts. It doesn't work if you need coworking, a remote-work crowd or English day to day: that's Almaty, not here. Budget-wise too: between oil money and the fact that everything arrives by truck, Aktau sits on the expensive end of Kazakhstan, not the cheap one.

Kazakhstan has cheap, decent home internet: fiber in the 50–100 Mbps range for ≈US$10–15 a month, with Kazakhtelecom and Beeline as the big providers. City 4G is solid and mobile data is among the cheapest in the region; the moment you head out into the Mangystau desert the signal dies and there's no backup. The real issue isn't speed, it's politics: the state has cut or throttled internet nationwide during unrest — the January 2022 shutdown started in this very region, in Zhanaozen — and some services turn up blocked or degraded from time to time, so plenty of people keep a VPN handy. If you have calls you can't miss, keep a second carrier's SIM loaded with data.

CoworkingCoworking

There's no coworking scene worth the name here. Business centres do rent monthly offices to companies — normal in an oil town — but that's not a flexible nomad coworking with a membership, decent coffee and people to talk to, and I'm not going to invent names for you. Some small space may open or close while you're reading this; don't plan a move around it. In practice you work from home and get out to cafés on the seafront promenade or in the malls, knowing the wifi is hit-or-miss and sockets are scarce. If coworking is non-negotiable in your routine, your Kazakh city is Almaty or Astana.

First, the odd part: Aktau barely has street names. Your address is microdistrict-building-apartment (something like "4-15-30") and you'll get lost the first few days — even taxi drivers work off the numbers. The low-numbered microdistricts, downtown and near the sea, are the walkable part: Soviet blocks, but with a market, a pharmacy and cafés on foot. The promenade strip and the newer buildings facing the Caspian are the priciest, and that's where oil-company people land. Further out you get the high-numbered microdistricts and the recent construction: newer flats, more square metres per dollar, but you'll be taking taxis for everything. Since everything is numbered rather than named, always ask for a pin on a map before you go see a flat.

ComunidadCommunity

Small city — on the order of 200,000 people — and no nomad community: don't expect meetups, remote-worker groups or an active Internations. Nearly all the foreigners are oil industry and they move in their own company circles. Daily life runs in Russian and Kazakh; Russian gets you through everything, and without it things get steep fast, because English barely exists outside hotels and the oil sector. Spanish speakers: essentially none. You meet people at the gym, through work, or on desert trips, which is where people actually open up. The upside is real: Kazakh hospitality isn't a cliché, and once you're inside a circle you're all the way in.

The climate is the filter. This is desert on the sea: constant wind, dust, dry summers around 35 °C that push past 40 in the worst weeks, with no shade and no trees, and cold winters where the Caspian wind makes it feel far worse than the thermometer says; the sea is really only enjoyable from about June to September. There's no river — drinking water comes from a desalination plant, officially fine but almost everyone buys bottled, and your skin and hair will notice. Rentals are informal — a one-page contract or a handshake, deposit in tenge and in cash — so never pay from abroad without a video call from inside the flat; scams with stolen photos are a thing. Check two immigration things before you fly: how many visa-free days your passport actually gets, and whether you genuinely qualify for the digital nomad visa Kazakhstan has been promoting (the "Neo Nomad"), because income thresholds and rules shift, and your migration registration has to be done by the hotel or your landlord within the first few days. Regional context too: Mangystau has a history of oil-worker protests (Zhanaozen is a couple of hours away) and of the nationwide internet cuts that came with them.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person.
