Akita
Aprox. 320,069 habitantesApprox. 320,069 people
Akita is the capital of the prefecture of the same name, in the Tōhoku region, in the north of Honshū island and facing the Sea of Japan. It's a land of long, heavy snows, of rice paddies and of some of the country's finest sake, thanks to its water and rice. The city keeps Senshū Park, on the former site of Kubota Castle, and each August it holds the Kantō Matsuri, one of Tōhoku's great festivals, in which participants balance towering poles hung with lanterns. Its northern culture, from the Akita dog to the Namahage of the nearby Oga peninsula, gives it a distinct, calm character.
