The British founded it in the 19th century and named it after James Abbott; its cool climate made it a garrison town and a gateway to the Galyat hill stations. Today it's known for the Pakistan Military Academy at Kakul and, sadly, as the place where Osama bin Laden was killed in 2011. It's a natural stop on the way to the Karakoram Highway.
