A Coruña

Aprox. 246,056 habitantesApprox. 246,056 people

Se come marisco y pulpo increíbles. A Coruña is an Atlantic city in Galicia, northwestern Spain, set on a peninsula that leaves it almost surrounded by sea. It's famous for the Tower of Hercules, the world's oldest working Roman lighthouse, and for its white glazed galleries that earn it the nickname "city of glass." The seafood and octopus are incredible. The climate is oceanic: cool, damp and green year-round, without extremes.

Mejor épocaBest time

Summer (June-September) for the city beaches and the San Juan bonfire festival; the rest of the year is cool and rains often. Galicia is green for exactly that reason.

PresupuestoBudget

Cheaper than Madrid or Barcelona. Eating and drinking in Galicia is good value, especially wine and seasonal seafood; reasonable lodging outside August.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en A Coruña?How much do you need per month in A Coruña?

A Coruña works as a base if you want a European city that's reasonably priced for what it gives you: the ocean inside the city, everything walkable, excellent fibre and seriously good food, without the prices or noise of Madrid or Barcelona. It doesn't work if you want sun, a nomad scene or cheap flights everywhere: it really does rain, almost nobody here is a digital nomad, and the airport is small. It's a city to live quietly in for a few months, not to network in.

Spain has one of the best fibre networks in Europe and A Coruña is no exception: fibre-to-the-home in practically any flat in the centre, 600 Mb to 1 Gb symmetric for ≈US$30-45 a month, installed in days rather than weeks. Video calls don't drop and there are no scheduled power cuts; that said, the April 2025 blackout that took down the whole Iberian peninsula showed that "it never happens" isn't the same as "it can't happen", so keep your laptop charged and mobile data as a plan B. 4G/5G coverage is solid across the city and along the seafront promenade; a SIM with generous data runs ≈US$15 a month and the low-cost carriers are genuinely competitive. The weak point isn't the network, it's some older short-let flats: always ask whether the connection is fibre and not a leftover ADSL line, and ask for a speed-test screenshot before you sign.

CoworkingCoworking

There is a coworking scene, but it's small: a handful of spaces, not an industry. A hot-desk membership runs ≈US$100-150 a month, a fixed desk a bit more. I'm not going to invent names for you, because these places open and close; find them on the map when you arrive and ask for a trial day before paying for a month. Plenty of people here just work from home or from cafés, and it works, but be aware: the traditional Galician bar is not a laptop café, and in many of them you'll get looks if you camp at a table for three hours. If you're coming for a tech community, the real ecosystem revolves around the university and the big local employers, not around coworkings.

Ciudad Vieja: the old stone quarter, quiet, beautiful and right next to the Marina; old flats, little light and patchy heating, but you can walk everywhere. Ensanche (Juan Flórez, Plaza de Pontevedra): the functional centre, with banks, supermarkets, buses and shops at hand — this is where you'll find the most rental listings. Monte Alto: a long-standing working neighbourhood next to the Tower of Hercules, cheaper, with real bars and a young crowd; it's where a lot of people who stay for months end up. Riazor / Los Rosales: for waking up near the beach and running the seafront promenade; Los Rosales is more residential, more family-oriented and a bit cheaper.

ComunidadCommunity

There's no digital nomad community worth the name: this isn't Valencia or Las Palmas. You'll meet locals, university students and the odd Erasmus kid, not people passing through with laptops. Day-to-day language in the city is Spanish (Galician shows up more in institutions and the surrounding towns), so if you speak Spanish you slot in with zero friction — that's the real advantage over other European bases. Social life happens in bars and in groups that already exist: the first two months are hard work, but once you're in, people are genuinely warm. Tech meetups exist, small and in Spanish, orbiting the university and the big local employers.

Lo que nadie te diceWhat nobody tells you

Llueve. It rains. Seriously: grey winters, Atlantic wind and whole weeks of drizzle; summer is short and mild (rarely above 25°C) and some Augusts are wet too. If your mood depends on sun, this isn't your base. Renting is the other pain: little supply, landlords asking for payslips and a guarantor, and furnished month-to-month places are scarce and cost more — don't expect to sign within three days, and watch the winter electricity bill, because power is expensive in Spain and a lot of older flats heat badly. If you're not from the EU, Schengen gives you 90 days in 180 and that's it; Spain does have a digital nomad visa (international teleworking), but it requires a high minimum income that's recalculated each year against the minimum wage — confirm the current figure with the consulate or the official site, not with a blog. One practical note: Alvedro airport is small with few routes, so for cheap flights you'll end up going to Santiago, a bit over an hour away. On safety, relax: this is one of the calmest cities in Spain; the worst you'll get is the noise from the Orzán bar area on a Saturday night.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
