Aruba has NO digital nomad visa, no matter how many listicles say otherwise. What exists is tourist admission under the admission law (LTU), administered by DIMAS: you enter visa-free (if your passport allows it), get a short stamp, and can request extensions up to an annual cap. The much-quoted "One Happy Workation" was an Aruba Tourism Authority marketing campaign with hotel and long-stay rental packages — it grants no immigration status and no right to work. If you want to actually settle, the real route is a DIMAS residence permit (person of independent means, entrepreneur/investor, local employment with a work permit, or family reunification), a serious process with apostilled documents.

There is no published income threshold for \"nomads\" because the category does not exist. As a tourist, the officer may ask you to show you can fund your stay (card, bank statement) along with an onward ticket and the address where you're staying; Aruba does not publish a fixed daily amount, so don't trust the round numbers floating around blogs. For a residence permit without local work (independent means/retiree), DIMAS requires sufficient, stable, provable own income, but the minimum figure is not stably published and is assessed case by case — check the official source (DIMAS) before planning anything. The currency is the Aruban florin (AWG/Afl), pegged at ≈ 1.79 AWG = 1 USD, and US dollars are accepted everywhere.

Tourist: the immigration officer sets the period on arrival; the common stamp is ≈ 30 days, and the total tourist stay is capped at roughly 180 days within a 12-month period, with extensions requested at DIMAS. Dutch nationals and certain categories are treated differently. DIMAS residence permit: typically granted for 1 year and renewed annually; after several continuous years you can apply for indefinite residence. Confirm the exact periods and the annual cap with DIMAS — Aruba's admission policy is adjusted fairly often.

Tiempo de trámiteProcessing time

Tourist extension at DIMAS: ≈ 1 to 3 weeks if the file is complete; apply with margin, never on the last day. DIMAS residence permit: ≈ 2 to 4 months from the moment the file is complete, and it can drag on if an apostille or translation is missing. Caribbean visa (if your passport needs one): ≈ 2 to 6 weeks at the Kingdom of the Netherlands consulate covering you. These are conservative estimates: check the official source for current processing times.

¿Qué pasaporte tienes?Which passport do you hold?

The permit is the same for everyone; what changes is how you apply: your route, your paperwork and your timings.

La regla general y los 8 pasaportes con reglas propias →The general rule and all 8 passports with specific rules →

The underlying rule is the same for everyone: Aruba has no digital nomad visa, so whatever your passport, your route is the extendable tourist stay or a DIMAS residence permit under a real category (independent means, business, employment or family). Three things change with the passport. First, whether you can land visa-free: the Dutch Caribbean has its OWN visa-required list, separate from the Schengen one, so being visa-exempt for Europe does not automatically mean visa-exempt for Aruba — this must be checked case by case with a Kingdom of the Netherlands consulate. Second, how you legalise your paperwork: if your country is in the Hague Convention (Mexico, Spain, Argentina, Colombia, the US and Canada, among many others), an apostille is enough; if not, you face chained consular legalisation, which is slower and pricier. Third, the Dutch special case: citizens of the Kingdom of the Netherlands have their own, more favourable regime under Aruba's admission law (LTU), though it is not automatic EU-style free movement. Beyond that, being Spanish, Mexican or American gives you no labour shortcut: working for an Aruban employer without a permit is prohibited for everyone alike, and working remotely for a foreign client or employer while on a tourist stamp is a grey area the law does not expressly authorise — tolerated in practice, but don't announce it at immigration and don't mistake it for a permit.

There are barely any direct flights from Mexico, so you'll usually connect via Panama, Bogotá or the United States; connecting through the US requires an ESTA or a US visa even if you never leave the airport. For the DIMAS file, Mexico is a Hague Convention party: your birth certificate and police record go with an apostille, issued by the apostille authority of the state that issued the document (or the federal one, for federal documents).

Spaniards enter Aruba visa-free as tourists, but EU free movement does not apply here: Aruba is a country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and an associated overseas territory, not EU territory, so a Spaniard has no automatic right to live or work there. To stay you go through the same DIMAS process as any third country. The practical advantage is paperwork: Spain is a Hague Convention party, your documents carry an apostille (Ministry of Justice or notarial, depending on the document), and Spanish is spoken on the island alongside Papiamento, Dutch and English, which makes counter dealings much easier.

Argentines normally don't need a visa to enter Aruba as tourists; still, confirm with a Kingdom consulate before flying. The usual connection is via Panama or Bogotá. For DIMAS, Argentina is a Hague Convention party: the birth certificate and the police record from the Registro Nacional de Reincidencia are apostilled at the Foreign Ministry (or at authorised notary associations). Bear Argentina's currency controls in mind when proving funds: DIMAS wants to see stable, available income, so dollar statements in accounts outside Argentina make your life easier.

Extra care is needed here: although Colombia is Schengen visa-exempt, the Dutch Caribbean runs its own list and Colombians have been required to hold a Caribbean visa for Aruba. Do NOT assume visa-free entry just because you're exempt in Europe — verify directly with the Kingdom of the Netherlands embassy or consulate in Colombia before buying a ticket, because arriving without it means you won't be allowed to board, and ask explicitly whether any exemption applies if you hold a valid US, Canadian or Schengen visa. On documents you're fine: Colombia is a Hague Convention party and you apostille online at the Foreign Ministry, including the judicial record certificate.

US citizens enter visa-free as tourists and are the island's main market, with direct flights from several cities. An Aruba-specific detail: Queen Beatrix Airport has US customs and immigration preclearance, so on the way BACK you clear US formalities in Aruba and land in the States as a domestic flight — budget extra airport time. "One Happy Workation" was marketed precisely at the US audience: it was a commercial hotel and long-stay rental package, not a permit, and it doesn't let you work on the island. For DIMAS, your documents are apostilled by the Secretary of State of the issuing state (or the State Department for federal documents such as the FBI Identity History Summary).

Being Dutch is the genuinely different case: as a citizen of the Kingdom you fall under your own regime in Aruba's admission law (LTU), considerably more accessible than a third-country national's, and in certain situations (prior ties to the island, meeting means and housing conditions) admission can be recognised by operation of law rather than as a discretionary permit. But it isn't automatic EU-style free movement: you still have to report to DIMAS, prove income and housing, and get registered. Confirm your exact situation with DIMAS, because the difference between "admission by law" and "permit" completely changes the paperwork you're asked for.

Venezuelans need a visa to enter Aruba and the process is demanding: even though the island sits about 30 km off the Venezuelan coast, the migration relationship has been restrictive, with air and sea traffic closing and reopening at different times. Check the current state of connections and consular services before planning any trip, and don't count on "popping over for a few days" without a visa. For residence files, Venezuelan apostilles and document validity are usually the bottleneck: plan for months, not weeks, and get everything in order before you move.

Canadians enter visa-free as tourists and there are seasonal direct flights, mostly in winter. Watch one very Canadian point: staying outside your province beyond the period it allows can temporarily void your provincial health coverage, so check your province's rules before stacking extensions in Aruba and buy solid travel insurance. On documents, Canada joined the Hague Convention in January 2024, so your papers are now apostilled (federal or provincial authority depending on the issuer) instead of going through consular legalisation.

Antes de solicitarBefore you apply

Get these ready — several take weeks and the application can't start without them.

  • Confirmar por escrito con el consulado del Reino de los Países Bajos si tu pasaporte necesita visado caribeño para Aruba: es lo primero, antes del boleto y antes de cualquier reservaConfirm in writing with the Kingdom of the Netherlands consulate whether your passport needs a Caribbean visa for Aruba: do this first, before the ticket and before any booking
  • Tener resuelto el alojamiento con dirección real en Aruba (reserva o contrato de alquiler): sin dirección no llenas la ED card ni presentas nada en DIMASHave accommodation sorted with a real Aruban address (booking or lease): without an address you can't fill in the ED card or file anything with DIMAS
BEFORE travelling, valid in Aruba for emergencies, hospitalisation and repatriation: there's no healthcare reciprocity and the local hospital bills you in full, even though insurance is no longer legally mandatory for tourists
  • Reunir extractos bancarios de los últimos meses y prueba de ingreso estable, idealmente en dólares o euros y en cuentas fuera de tu país si allí hay control de cambiosGather bank statements from recent months and proof of stable income, ideally in dollars or euros and in accounts outside your country if it has currency controls
  • Si vas por residencia: pedir con antelación el acta de nacimiento y el certificado de antecedentes penales, apostillarlos y traducirlos, cuidando que no caduquen antes de presentarlosIf you're going for residence: order your birth certificate and police clearance certificate early, apostille and translate them, making sure they don't expire before you file
  • Preguntar a DIMAS, antes de viajar, si tu categoría exige garantía o depósito bancario en Aruba y de cuánto: no lo descubras en la ventanillaAsk DIMAS before travelling whether your category requires a bank guarantee or deposit in Aruba and how much: don't find out at the counter
  • Sacar cita en DIMAS con margen y, si aplica, dejar poder a un empleador, abogado o gestor local para que presente por tiBook the DIMAS appointment with margin and, if applicable, grant power of attorney to an employer, lawyer or local agent to file on your behalf

El proceso, paso a pasoThe process, step by step

8 pasos8 steps
  1. 1Primero: confirma si tu pasaporte necesita visado caribeñoFirst: check whether your passport needs a Caribbean visa

Aruba does not use the Schengen list: the Dutch Caribbean (Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Bonaire) has its own list of visa-required countries. Many Latin American passports enter visa-free, others do not, and showing up without one means you won't be allowed to board. Check your case with the Kingdom of the Netherlands consulate or embassy covering you BEFORE buying a ticket, not on a blog. If you need a Caribbean visa, it's applied for outside Aruba and adds weeks to the plan.

  2. 2Decide la vía real: turista prorrogable o permiso de residenciaDecide the real route: extendable tourist stay or residence permit

Don't waste time looking for a "nomad visa" form: it doesn't exist, and "One Happy Workation" was a tourism-board marketing campaign, not an immigration status. If your plan is weeks or a few months, the route is entering as a tourist and extending at DIMAS. If your plan is to live in Aruba, the route is a DIMAS residence permit under whichever category applies: independent means/retiree, entrepreneur or investor, employment with an Aruban company (filed by the employer), or family reunification. Picking the wrong category is one of the most common reasons files get rejected.

  3. 3Llena la ED card antes de volar (y verifica que siga vigente)Fill in the ED card before flying (and check it's still required)

Aruba asks passengers to complete an online ED card (embarkation/disembarkation card) before arrival, free of charge. It asks for personal details, flight, accommodation and contact; when you finish you get a QR code by email. Keep the QR on your phone and printed too. Use only the official site — there are clone pages charging for a free process — and confirm before travelling that the requirement is still in force and when the window opens, since Aruba has been adjusting this process.

The immigration officer sets your permitted stay, not you. Have your onward ticket, accommodation booking or lease with the exact address, proof of funds (card, statement) and your health insurance handy. If asked why you're coming, the honest and correct answer is tourism or a visit: saying "I'm coming to work" can cost you entry, because working in Aruba without a permit is prohibited under the admission law (LTU). Check the stamp before you leave the airport: that's the real date your stay expires.

The tourist stay extension is requested at DIMAS, in person and by appointment, BEFORE your stamped period runs out; ask DIMAS how far in advance you should file. You bring your passport, proof of entry, proof of accommodation, proof of funds, health insurance and onward ticket, and you pay the fee. Overstaying means a fine and a record that complicates re-entry; on a small, tightly controlled island this does not go unnoticed. Keep the extension receipt with your passport.

  6. 6Para residencia: arma el expediente apostillado y legalizadoFor residence: build the apostilled and legalised file

Ojo con la vigencia: estos certificados suelen caducar pronto, así que pídelos cerca de la fecha en que vas a presentar.DIMAS works with recent original documents: birth certificate, police clearance certificate from your country (and sometimes from wherever you lived recently), medical certificate, proof of income and bank statements, and a lease or proof of housing in Aruba. Every foreign document must be apostilled (if your country is in the Hague Convention) or consularly legalised, and translated if it isn't in a language DIMAS accepts. Watch validity: these certificates usually expire quickly, so order them close to your filing date.

  7. 7Presenta en DIMAS: cita, tasas y garantía bancariaFile at DIMAS: appointment, fees and bank guarantee

The residence application is filed at DIMAS by appointment; in several categories a third party (employer, lawyer or local agent) can file it with a power of attorney. You pay the processing fee and, depending on the category, DIMAS may require you to post a guarantee or deposit at an Aruban bank covering a possible return — ask the amount and format before you go. You get a receipt with a file number: keep it, that's how you track progress. Don't sign long leases or quit your job until you have the decision in hand.

  8. 8Al aprobarte: recoge el permiso, inscríbete en el Censo y arregla el seguroOnce approved: collect the permit, register at Censo and sort out insurance

When DIMAS approves, you collect the permit in person within the period they give you. Then you register at Censo (the civil/population registry) with your Aruban address: without that registration you can't move forward with a bank, utilities or later paperwork. Sort out health cover immediately — access to the public AZV insurance depends on your status and on whether you contribute locally, so if you don't qualify you need private insurance valid in Aruba. Note the expiry date the same day: renewal is filed in advance, not at the last minute.

Approval starts the clocks: a window to enter the country and deadline-bound steps after you land.

  • Si te dan visado caribeño, entra a Aruba dentro de la validez impresa en el visado: la vigencia corre desde la fecha del propio visado, no desde tu llegadaIf you're granted a Caribbean visa, enter Aruba within the validity printed on it: the clock runs from the visa's own date, not from your arrival
  • Revisa el sello de entrada el mismo día que llegas: ahí está la fecha real en que se te vence la estancia, y es la que cuenta para pedir prórroga a tiempoCheck your entry stamp the day you land: that's the real date your stay expires, and it's the one that matters for filing an extension in time
  • Al aprobarte DIMAS, recoge el permiso en persona dentro del plazo indicado en la notificación; si lo dejas pasar, el expediente puede archivarse y tocaría empezar de nuevoOnce DIMAS approves you, collect the permit in person within the period stated in the notification; if you let it lapse, the file can be closed and you'd start over
  • Inscríbete en el Censo (registro civil/de población) con tu dirección en Aruba en cuanto tengas el permiso: es la llave para banco, servicios y cualquier trámite posteriorRegister at Censo (the civil/population registry) with your Aruban address as soon as you have the permit: it's the key to banking, utilities and any later paperwork
  • Resuelve la cobertura de salud sin días de hueco: verifica con AZV si tu estatus te da acceso al sistema público (suele ir ligado a residir y cotizar localmente) y, si no calificas, mantén activo un seguro privado válido en la islaSort out health coverage with no gap days: check with AZV whether your status gives you access to the public system (it is usually tied to residing and contributing locally) and, if you don't qualify, keep private insurance valid on the island active
  • El plazo del permiso corre desde la fecha de concesión, no desde que llegaste: apunta el vencimiento el mismo día que lo recibesThe permit's period runs from the date of grant, not from when you arrived: note the expiry the same day you receive it
  • La renovación se pide con antelación y exige volver a probar ingresos, vivienda y seguro; empieza a juntar papeles a mitad del año de vigencia y pregunta a DIMAS con cuántos meses debes presentarRenewal is filed in advance and requires re-proving income, housing and insurance; start gathering papers halfway through the permit year and ask DIMAS how many months ahead you must file
