Windhoek
Aprox. 268,132 habitantesApprox. 268,132 people
Windhoek, Namibia's capital, sits at around 1,700 meters in a basin ringed by arid hills, right in the center of the country. It's a small, orderly, calm city with a peculiar flavor: German colonial heritage shows in the churches, the beer and some street names, mixed with African culture and the life of townships like Katutura. It's not a monument destination but the logical launchpad for the Namib desert, Sossusvlei and Etosha. You use it to stock up and start the adventure.
Mejor épocaBest time
May to October (southern winter, dry season): sunny mild days, cold nights due to altitude. The wet season runs November to April with heat and occasional rain. Good weather most of the year.
PresupuestoBudget
Moderate for southern Africa. Food and lodging are affordable, but the real cost is renting a 4x4 and fuel, essential for touring the country. Budget carefully for transport.
EntradaEntry
Namibia permite entrar sin visa a muchas nacionalidades para estancias turísticas cortas; otras tramitan visa. Confirma los requisitos oficiales antes de viajar.Namibia lets many nationalities enter visa-free for short tourist stays; others need a visa. Confirm the official requirements before traveling.
In town you get around by taxi or car; the center is compact and walkable by day. But Namibia is a road-trip country: almost everyone rents a 4x4 in Windhoek to hit the desert gravel roads.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Windhoek? How much do you need per month in Windhoek?
Windhoek works if you want a calm, dry, English-speaking base with all of southern Africa within reach and a CAT (UTC+2) day that lines up nicely with Europe. It doesn't work if you want a ready-made nomad scene: there barely is one, coworking is thin, everything moves by car, and the centre goes dead after dark. It's also less cheap than it sounds — decent rent plus getting around eats the budget fast, and if your team is in the Americas the time gap will hurt.

Real fibre exists across Windhoek's residential suburbs — Paratus and Telecom Namibia are the names you'll hear — and a normal plan gets you through the workday fine: video calls and heavy uploads hold up. Don't expect Lisbon or Bangkok numbers: mid-tier plans are tens of megabits, not hundreds, and the price per meg is high. Namibia does have its own submarine cable landing on the coast (Swakopmund), so you're not routed through South Africa, but bandwidth is still expensive. Check two things before signing: whether the building already has fibre installed (the difference between one flat and the one next door is real) and whether your plan is capped — capped data packages are still sold here. MTC mobile coverage is excellent inside the city and drops off fast once you head into the desert. Power cuts happen, but Namibia has historically had far less scheduled load shedding than South Africa; still, if your income depends on being online, keep a battery and a mobile-data plan B.
CoworkingCoworking
Small, unglamorous scene. Windhoek has a handful of spaces tied to the local startup and innovation ecosystem plus private shared offices, but there's no row of pretty coworkings with a view like Cape Town or Lisbon, and several open and close. A flexible desk runs ≈US$80–180 a month, with the caveat that the sample is tiny and prices vary a lot. In practice almost everyone works from home and goes out to cafés: there's a decent specialty-coffee culture (Slowtown, a Namibian chain born here, is the obvious reference) and the café floors at malls like Maerua or The Grove work fine for half a day. Honest tip: don't move counting on one specific coworking — email ahead and confirm it's still running, what hours it keeps, and whether it has a generator or battery for outages.
Klein Windhoek is the default foreigner pick: leafy, quiet, restaurants and groceries close by, and one of the few places where walking a bit feels normal. Eros and Ludwigsdorf are the more residential, well-off version — houses and gardens rather than flats; lovely, but you'll need a car, full stop. Olympia, Pionierspark, Windhoek West and Dorado Park are the middle-class option: cheaper, honest, well connected, no postcard charm. The CBD has offices and a few apartment blocks: handy by day, dead and uncomfortable at night, so I wouldn't pick it to live in. Katutura, the historic township, is where most of the city actually lives and where Windhoek's real life is — but it's not where a newcomer without a local network should set up alone.
ComunidadCommunity
Language isn't an issue: English is the official language and paperwork, work and city life all happen in it, with Afrikaans everywhere day to day, German left over from the colonial era, and Oshiwambo as the most widely spoken mother tongue. Hispanic community: minimal. There are Namibians who studied in Cuba and speak Spanish — you'll bump into one — but don't count on a ready-made Latino crowd. Meeting people happens the analogue way: gyms, running and cycling clubs, churches, the safari and tourism crowd, the German-Namibian scene, and the weekend bar-and-braai circuit. If you're outgoing you'll plug in fast because the city is small and everyone knows everyone; if you expect a nomad Slack with events every week, you'll feel lonely.
Lo que nadie te diceWhat nobody tells you
Cuatro cosas. Water: Windhoek sits on a semi-desert plateau at ~1,700 m, has been through serious droughts with real restrictions, and has been recycling wastewater into drinking water for decades — it's safe, but water is a topic here and in a dry year there are limits. Getting around: there's no decent formal public transport. Municipal buses exist with very limited routes and hours, plus cheap shared taxis (≈US$1 a ride, with their own rules and risks), and that's about it; without driving your life shrinks a lot, and a rental car can cost more than your rent. Add that the international airport is about 45 km from town. Safety: calmer than Johannesburg, yes, but theft and muggings are real — don't walk the CBD alone at night and don't wander with your phone in your hand. Paperwork and weather: Namibia has a digital nomad visa with an income requirement, and in 2025 it started charging visa fees to nationalities that previously entered free; check YOUR case on the official source before booking a flight, because it changed and it can change again. And the climate misleads: October–December gets seriously hot, January–March is the rainy season with afternoon storms, and in June–August nights drop near freezing in houses with no heating. Bonus: prices are in Namibian dollars, pegged 1:1 to the South African rand, so when the rand moves your USD budget moves with it.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
