Willemstad

Aprox. 125,000 habitantesApprox. 125,000 people

Willemstad is the capital of Curaçao, a Dutch Caribbean island off the coast of Venezuela. Its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its most famous image is the row of colour-fronted houses along the Handelskade, mirrored in the channel. Papiamento, Dutch, Spanish and English are all spoken here; sitting outside the usual Caribbean hurricane belt, it's dry, with cactus. It's a cruise stop but also a city with its own life, colonial Jewish quarter included.

Mejor épocaBest time

A good year-round destination thanks to its dry climate. It sits outside the main hurricane track, though the cooler air comes December to April.

PresupuestoBudget

Currency: the Antillean guilder (pegged to the dollar). A mid-to-high price island; a local Creole plate costs far less than the tourist restaurants.

EntradaEntry

Curaçao is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, not Schengen. Many nationalities enter visa-free for tourism; check your case.

The centre (Punda and Otrobanda) is walkable, joined by the floating Queen Emma Bridge. For the southern beaches a rental car is best.

Puente flotante Queen Emma

A pedestrian bridge on pontoons that swings open to let ships into the harbour. Crossing it while it 'floats' is the city's classic moment.

The oldest continuously used synagogue in the Americas, from the 17th century, with its famous sand floor. A testament to the island's Sephardic Jewish community.

Handelskade

Curaçao's postcard: merchant houses with yellow, pink and blue fronts lined up along the water, at their best at sunset.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Willemstad? How much do you need per month in Willemstad?

Willemstad works if you want the Caribbean with European-grade infrastructure: real fiber internet, drinkable (desalinated) tap water, a modern hospital, and constant trade winds that make the heat livable. It does not work if you want cheap — it's one of the pricier bases in the Caribbean, electricity is brutal, almost everything in the supermarket is imported, and without a car you're stuck in one neighborhood. Also worth knowing: the nomad community is tiny. Here you socialize with Dutch expats, Venezuelans and divers, not with a Medellín-style hub crowd.

Better than most of the Caribbean, and priced accordingly. Flow (the old UTS) and Digicel offer fiber across much of Willemstad; typical residential plans run ≈50–300 Mbps for ≈US$60–100 a month, and some areas still get coax instead, with weaker upload. The island is a submarine-cable landing point and generally handles video calls without drama. Short power cuts do happen, more in older neighborhoods and during the rainy season — a small UPS for the router plus mobile data as backup is cheap insurance if you live on calls. Mobile coverage is good almost everywhere (the island is small); a prepaid SIM with data runs ≈US$20–35 a month. One thing to check BEFORE you sign a lease: whether fiber is already installed in that specific apartment. In older houses a new install can take weeks.

CoworkingCoworking

Small, niche scene. There are a handful of spaces around Pietermaai/Otrobanda and the Saliña office area; a flex desk runs ≈US$120–200 a month. I'm deliberately not naming specific spaces: on an island of ~150,000 people they open and close fast, so ask in the local expat Facebook groups a couple of weeks before you land and confirm the place still exists. Realistically, most remote workers here work from home plus Pietermaai cafés and the beach clubs at Jan Thiel/Mambo. That works — but beach wifi is "email and Slack" wifi, not "upload video" wifi. If calls are your job, pay for a proper desk or make sure your apartment's fiber is solid.

Pietermaai — the restored historic strip and the default landing spot: walkable, bars, cafés, boutique hotels, most first-time nomads end up here (and complain about weekend noise). Scharloo — right next door, restored colonial houses, quieter and usually a bit cheaper, with an arty renovation vibe. Jan Thiel / Vista Royal — the beach-and-resort side, heavily Dutch expat, comfortable and safe, but you need a car for absolutely everything. Piscadera / Blue Bay — residential with its own beach, calm and pricey. Mahaai / Julianadorp / Brievengat — ordinary local residential neighborhoods with no tourism, where rent actually drops; less charm, real prices.

ComunidadCommunity

Papiamentu is the street language, and since it's an Iberian-based creole, a Spanish speaker understands a surprising amount within weeks. Spanish is genuinely useful day to day — there's a large Venezuelan, Colombian and Dominican community. Dutch runs the paperwork and English runs tourism, so you're rarely stuck. Meeting people happens through expat Facebook groups, diving (Curaçao is a shore-diving mecca), beach clubs on the Jan Thiel/Seaquarium side, and running/padel groups. The nomad community as such is small: you'll socialize with Dutch expats, Venezuelans and divers more than with a Medellín-style hub crowd. If you need a networking event every week, this isn't your city.

Electricity will eat you alive. Curaçao has some of the priciest power in the Caribbean, and A/C running 24/7 can double your bill. Ask the landlord for the apartment's Aqualectra history before signing — this is the number one budget surprise here. Groceries are almost all imported, mostly from the Netherlands and the US, so cooking at home saves less than you'd expect. The real savings are in local produce and truk'i pan food trucks, not the supermarket. Public transport exists but doesn't really work as a plan. The konvoi vans and ABC buses are infrequent and don't cover the island well. Budget a car or scooter, or accept living inside one walkable neighborhood. Rentals: long contracts (12 months) plus one or two months' deposit are normal, and prices jump in high season (Dec–Apr) because you're bidding against tourist rentals. Arrive in the low season if you can, and negotiate month-to-month. Immigration: tourist entry is short (typically around 30 days, extendable), and Curaçao has run a remote-work stay permit (@HOME in Curaçao) whose terms and availability have changed over the years. Confirm the current rules with immigration before you buy a long ticket — don't plan on living in the grey. Money: the local guilder is pegged to the US dollar (around 1.79 per US$1) and dollars are accepted almost everywhere, but you take whatever change rate the merchant gives you, and euros lose you money. Ask which currency and card to use; opening a local bank account without residency is slow. Weather: the island sits below the main hurricane belt but isn't immune, and the rainy season (roughly October–February) brings heavy downpours and flooded streets. Otherwise it's hot and dry year-round, with constant trade winds that make the heat genuinely bearable. Safety is fine in tourist and expat areas, but there are pockets around the port and older parts of Otrobanda where locals don't walk at night. Ask someone local instead of guessing. The old Schottegat refinery has been idle and tangled in restart negotiations for years. If it ever runs at full tilt again, air quality downwind is a real issue — worth asking about locally before you commit to a lease on that side.
