Wellington is Oceania's coolest, most compact capital: wedged between hills and a harbor, with the world's best coffee and craft-beer scene per capita, free museums and the creative heart of New Zealand (Lord of the Rings was filmed here). Its one famous enemy: the wind, which blows like nowhere else.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Wellington? How much do you need per month in Wellington?
Wellington works if you want a small, walkable city with genuinely good fibre internet, and if your work doesn't depend on sharing a time zone with the US or Europe (it's UTC+12/+13 here — when New York wakes up, you're going to bed). It's expensive for what it gives you — groceries and rent bite hard — and the weather is the national joke: sustained wind and sideways rain for a good chunk of the year. This isn't a city for stretching your money; it's a city for living quietly and working in peace if your clients are Asia-Pacific or your hours are flexible.

This is where New Zealand treats you well: the national fibre network covers essentially all of Wellington, and a standard 300/100 Mbps plan runs ≈US$50-60 a month, with 1 Gbps and up if you genuinely need it. It's about as stable as it gets for a nomad — fibre rarely drops and there are no scheduled blackouts. Three honest caveats: residential plans are usually sold on 12-month terms (month-to-month exists and costs a bit more); in older central buildings the "included" internet is sometimes a weak shared link, so ask whether there's real fibre to the unit; and latency is what it is — you're at the end of the world: roughly 130-150 ms to the US west coast and 280-300 ms to Europe, fine for video calls but noticeable if you work against remote servers or game. Mobile 4G/5G in the city is solid across all three carriers (One NZ, Spark, 2degrees), and a prepaid plan with plenty of data is ≈US$20-25 a month. Outside the city, in the hills and along the coast, signal degrades fast.
CoworkingCoworking
Small but real scene: Wellington is the political capital and has a tech and startup ecosystem that's large for its size, so there are decent coworking spaces downtown, clustered in Te Aro and along the Willis/Lambton strip. Creative HQ, the city's accelerator and incubator, has anchored the startup world for years and a lot of the workspaces orbit around it; specific venues come and go, so it's worth checking availability once you land rather than booking blind. A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$250-320 (note: it's almost always quoted before 15% GST) and a dedicated desk climbs well above that; nearly everyone sells day passes if you want to try before committing. One honest caveat: the 2024-2025 public sector cuts emptied a lot of downtown offices, so there's availability and negotiable pricing, but some spaces feel half-full. The very Wellington alternative is working from cafés — this is New Zealand's coffee capital with genuine local roasters (Havana Coffee Works, Flight Coffee, People's Coffee), a flat white costs ≈US$4, and the wifi is usually good.
Te Aro is the real centre: apartments, Cuba Street, bars, everything walkable and the biggest stock of furnished rentals — also the loudest on weekends. Mount Victoria is the pick for anyone wanting a character house ten minutes' walk from the CBD; pricier, with steep streets. Newtown is the diverse neighbourhood with the best cheap food, softer rents and real street life, a couple of kilometres out. Thorndon and Kelburn are the quiet options: Thorndon next to Parliament, Kelburn up the hill by Victoria University, with the cable car to get down to town. If money is genuinely tight, people move to Lower Hutt or Petone (30-40 min by train or bus), where rent drops a fair bit but you lose the walk-everywhere quality that's the best thing about Wellington.
ComunidadCommunity
Daily life is 100% in English and the Spanish-speaking community is small — it exists, but you won't run your life in Spanish the way you can in Lisbon or Bali. The upside: the city is so compact that you keep bumping into the same people and a circle forms fast; there are plenty of tech, design and startup meetups for a city this size, and the Cuba Street café and bar scene makes meeting people easy. The downside: the passing-through nomad flow is thin, most foreigners here arrived on work visas and stayed, and Kiwis are friendly but their friendships were set at university — getting in takes months, not weeks. In winter the city goes indoors and social life drops noticeably.
The wind isn't a fun fact: Wellington is one of the windiest inhabited cities on earth, with gusts that close the airport and entire weeks of sideways rain. If weather affects your mood, come for a few weeks before committing. Second, the housing: much of the stock is timber, poorly insulated and damp, and although Healthy Homes rules now require fixed heating, insulation and ventilation, in older flats you'll be cold and fighting mould — ask explicitly about insulation, heating and damp before signing. Third, the lease: the norm is a 12-month fixed term with a bond of up to four weeks; short-term furnished places are scarce and expensive, so many people start in a shared flat while they look. Fourth, immigration: since January 2025 New Zealand explicitly allows you to work remotely for an overseas employer while on a visitor visa, which makes this far more viable — but the visitor permit is typically three months for visa-waiver countries (Mexico, Chile, Argentina and Brazil among them), you need the NZeTA and the IVL levy before you fly, and a long stay can trigger tax obligations; check your own case on the Immigration New Zealand site, because these rules change. Fifth, earthquakes: Wellington sits on an active fault, buildings carry a seismic rating (%NBS) and it's worth asking for it before you rent. And don't underestimate the distance: flights to Europe or the Americas are long and expensive, and popping out of the country for a weekend simply isn't an option. Exchange-rate note: every figure here is converted at roughly NZ$1 ≈ US$0.60 — if the kiwi moves, adjust.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
