It was formerly called Chardzhou in Soviet times. It's an agricultural and industrial center —cotton and textiles— in the Amu Darya corridor, between the Karakum desert and irrigated land. Turkmenistan is one of the world's most closed countries and traveling requires a visa and often a guide; it's not an easy stopover.
