Tarawa is an atoll rather than a compact city: South Tarawa links densely populated islets along a narrow strip between lagoon and ocean. For a first reading, connect Betio, Bairiki, Reliquias de la batalla de Tarawa, Laguna de Tarawa: government, harbour and memory of the 1943 battle are distributed among separate settlements. Water, waste systems and transport are limited; visit wartime remains with a guide and respect, removing nothing.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Tarawa? How much do you need per month in Tarawa?
Let's say it up front: Tarawa is not a nomad base, and not out of snobbery but arithmetic — there's no coworking, no remote-work scene, and internet has historically come off satellite, with data caps and high latency. The people actually living in South Tarawa work for the Kiribati government, for aid programs (Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the UN, development banks), for the churches, for the tuna industry that licenses some of the richest fishing grounds in the Pacific, or they're i-Kiribati who came home. If you arrive on a contract with housing and medical evacuation covered, Tarawa will be one of the most intense experiences of your life; if you arrive to wing it with a laptop, it's one of the worst places on earth to try. The numbers below are order-of-magnitude reference, not a locked budget: there's no published rental market, almost everything arrives imported by ship, and prices move with freight — confirm with your employer or with someone already on the ground.

Kiribati is one of the last corners of the world without decent connectivity. Historically all traffic has gone out by satellite (including MEO capacity), which means high latency, per-gigabyte pricing and capped plans: downloading anything heavy feels like a luxury and a long video call is a gamble. I won't quote you a megabit figure, because what actually reaches the end user varies far too much by plan and time of day. There's a submarine cable project for eastern Micronesia that should land in Tarawa and change the picture — don't assume it's already lit, or that the promised speed reached people's houses: confirm it before you buy a ticket. Mobile is essentially one operator (the old TSKL, now under the Amalgamated Telecom Holdings group and trading as Vodafone Kiribati) and it covers the urban strip of South Tarawa reasonably well, thinning out across the rest of the atoll and the outer islands. Power cuts happen and they take the router with them. There's no network censorship or political blocking that I'm aware of, and no sanctions to break your banking or insurance; the problem here is physical, not political. If you were counting on Starlink, verify its legal status and real availability in-country rather than assuming it.
CoworkingCoworking
There is no coworking in Tarawa, and that's not a market gap — there's no market. The closest thing to a place to work outside the house is the restaurant or lobby of one of South Tarawa's handful of hotels, which have long been the default meeting spots — in a place this small, ownership, hours and even whether somewhere is still open all shift, so ask when you land rather than trusting a name. The other option is the office of whatever project or agency you work for, which is how everybody actually solves it. The USP campus in South Tarawa has a library and a computer room, but that's student infrastructure, not a freelancer space. In practice: your desk is your house, and your bandwidth is whatever your contract gave you.
South Tarawa is basically one road on a ribbon of sand, so "neighborhood" here means where on the line you live. Betio is the western end: the port, the tuna plants, the Marine Training Centre and some of the most brutal population density in the Pacific — that's where fishing and logistics people stay, and it's loud and scorching. Bairiki is the administrative center: ministries, banks, offices, and some civil-servant and consultant housing. Bikenibeu, to the east, holds schools and much of the housing rented to foreigners — quieter — and right next door is Nawerewere with the country's referral hospital. In between, Teaoraereke and Ambo have project and agency houses (and the USP campus), and Temwaiku/Bonriki near the airport is the loosest and breeziest. Housing is almost never found on a listings site: land is family-held and rentals come through contacts or straight through your employer.
ComunidadCommunity
The foreign community is counted in hundreds, not thousands: Australian and New Zealand aid staff, volunteers (JICA and the Australian and Kiwi volunteer programs), UN and development-bank people, missionaries, diplomatic staff, and Asian fishing operators down in Betio. That has an obvious upside: two weeks in and you know everyone, because the dinners, the Friday hotel bar and the volleyball are the same for everybody. i-Kiribati social life is a different thing and it's the good one: it revolves around the church and the maneaba, and if you're invited to a botaki — a baptism, a first birthday, a farewell — you go, you eat, you sit through the speeches and you dance, because that's how you stop being the foreigner passing through. Any attempt at te-Kiribati is hugely appreciated, even just "mauri" and "ko rabwa". What you will not find is other people doing remote work: no meetups, no nomad group, that simply doesn't exist here.
Three things, in order of how badly they wreck a plan. First, health: the referral hospital at Nawerewere is very limited and anything serious means evacuation to Fiji or Australia, which costs a fortune — insurance with medical evacuation included is non-negotiable, not an add-on. Second, water and sanitation: the South Tarawa aquifer is contaminated by sheer population density, waterborne illness is routine, and the lagoon along the urban strip is not for swimming no matter how good it looks; boiled or treated rainwater, always. Third, logistics: there are only a handful of flights a week (via Nadi on Fiji Airways, or via Brisbane/Nauru on Nauru Airlines) and one cancellation strands you for days, not hours; domestic flights and boats to the outer islands run late as a rule. Add that life runs on Australian dollars in cash — cards barely work outside a couple of places and ATMs are few, so arrive with notes — that working requires a permit and an employer to sponsor you (tourist entry is short and doesn't cover work; confirm the exact rules for your passport before flying), that packs of loose dogs roam the road, and that king tides flood parts of the atoll. None of this is a reason not to go; it's a reason to go prepared and for a concrete purpose.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person.
