Tallinn

Tallinn is Estonia's capital, on the Gulf of Finland in the Baltic. Its walled medieval Old Town, with conical towers, is among Europe's best-preserved and a UNESCO site. But Tallinn is also the face of e-Estonia: a hyper-digital country where almost everything is done online, drawing nomads and founders (Estonia pioneered e-Residency and a digital-nomad visa). Winters are long and dark; summers mild with very long days.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Tallinn? How much do you need per month in Tallinn?

Tallinn works really well if you work online and value infrastructure over weather: first-world internet, nearly all paperwork done digitally, a safe, compact city with forest and sea 20 minutes away. It isn't cheap: with the euro, post-2022 inflation and a VAT rate that has gone up twice in a few years, groceries and restaurants now feel close to German prices, though rent is still below Western Europe. The real reason people leave isn't money: it's the winter, with about six hours of daylight in December and months of grey.

This is one of the best setups you'll find anywhere, and it isn't marketing: fibre in practically every Tallinn building, 300 Mbps to 1 Gbps plans for ≈US$25-35 a month from the big three (Telia, Elisa, Tele2), fast installation and rare outages. Mobile 4G/5G is solid across the city and stays usable on the road and out in the countryside; unlimited mobile data is cheap, so a hotspot plan makes a real backup. No scheduled blackouts, no censorship, no need for a VPN for anything. The usual weak spot is shared wifi in older flats in the Old Town and Kalamaja: if it's a wooden house with a prehistoric router, ask for your own line or test a video call before you sign.

CoworkingCoworking

A small but real scene, tightly wired into the startup ecosystem. The axis is Telliskivi Creative City, home to Lift99, the hub best known among founders and tech people. Workland runs several more corporate-feeling locations around the city, and there are smaller independent spaces plus cafés that are fine with laptops. Prices: hot desk ≈US$170-230 (≈€150-200) a month, private office quite a bit more. Almost everything runs in English, and people pay for the networking as much as for the desk, so drop into an event or ask for a trial day before committing to a full month.

Kalamaja is nearly every nomad's first pick: colourful wooden houses, cafés, the Balti jaam market, Telliskivi next door and the sea within walking distance. Kesklinn, the centre, is the practical choice if you want a new building, a lift and modern heating; the Rotermann quarter is the pricey, comfortable version. Kadriorg is green, quiet and lovely around the park and palace, ideal if you work from home and want silence. Vanalinn, the medieval Old Town, is spectacular for a month and exhausting for a year: tourists, weekend bar noise, old flats and endless stairs. If you're chasing price, Mustamäe and Lasnamäe are Soviet-era block districts well connected by tram and bus, functional but with zero charm.

ComunidadCommunity

English gets you everywhere: younger people speak it well, and in tech and coworking it's the default, so you don't need Estonian to live here (learning it is another story — it's genuinely hard). There's an active foreign community around the startup ecosystem, e-Residency and Telliskivi events, including the Latitude59 conference in spring, the best moment of the year for meeting people. Tallinn is also heavily Russian-speaking — roughly a third of the city — and since 2022 there's a sizeable Ukrainian community. The Spanish-speaking scene exists but is small; don't count on it. The honest warning: Estonians are reserved and local friendships take a long time; most of your circle will be foreigners, and in winter social life moves indoors and you have to go looking for it.

Winter is the real filter: in December the sun comes up around 9 and it's dark before 4, with grey, damp months and sub-zero temperatures from November through March. Plenty of people do one winter and don't come back — if you're prone to seasonal slumps, test it between October and February, not in summer (the near-endless-daylight summer will make you fall in love and mislead you). Second warning, the one that confuses everyone: e-Residency is NOT residency or a visa. It only lets you open and run an Estonian company online; it gives you no right to live here. To stay beyond the 90 Schengen days you need the digital nomad visa, which requires a high proven monthly income and whose threshold gets raised almost every year — confirm the current figure on the official Police and Border Guard site before planning anything. For rentals, listings live on local portals like kv.ee and city24.ee, a deposit is nearly always required and an agency fee is common; ask explicitly whether heating is included, because one winter month can double your utility bill. And watch your budget: prices here are not what they were three years ago, so treat any figure as a reference and confirm it on arrival. The city is one of Europe's safest — what actually bothers you is ice on the pavements and weekend stag-party noise in the Old Town.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
