Tainan is Taiwan's oldest city and its capital for centuries, on the island's southwest coast. The Dutch landed here in the 17th century and built Fort Zeelandia (now Anping) and Fort Provintia (now Chihkan Tower), and here Koxinga made his stand after driving them out. It's the city of temples —home to the island's oldest Confucius Temple— and, above all, Taiwan's food capital: danzai noodles, coffin bread (guan cai ban), dawn bowls of milkfish soup and tofu pudding are local institutions. It's walkable or best on a scooter, with a warm subtropical climate most of the year.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Tainan? How much do you need per month in Tainan?
Tainan works if you want a cheap, very safe Asian base with Taiwan's best food, first-world internet, and a café scene that doubles as your office. It doesn't work if you need a critical mass of nomads, street-level English, or nightlife — that's Taipei, about 1h45 away by bullet train. Add that May through September is a humid oven, and that without a scooter the city shrinks on you fast.

Taiwan has some of the best internet infrastructure in Asia and Tainan is no exception. Chunghwa Telecom (HiNet) fiber reaches almost every building, and 300 Mbps to 1 Gbps plans run roughly ≈US$30–70 a month depending on speed and contract — meaning internet is NOT as cheap as the rest of life here. It's stable, with low latency to Japan, Korea and the US west coast, so long video calls are a non-issue. One clarification worth making: Taiwan is not China. There's no Great Firewall and no censorship — Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and everything else work without a VPN. Mobile 4G/5G coverage is excellent even down temple alleys, so hotspotting is a genuine backup. Two honest caveats: the building matters more than the provider — in older subdivided houses several studios sometimes share a single line, so ask whether the connection is yours or shared BEFORE you sign — and while outages aren't routine, Taiwan has had nationwide blackouts (2021 and 2022) and typhoons knock out power locally. Keep a charged battery and spare data during typhoon season.
CoworkingCoworking
The coworking scene is small and it isn't what drives this city. There's a handful of spaces, several tied to the National Cheng Kung University ecosystem and the Southern Taiwan Science Park: monthly hot desks run ≈US$90–200 and day passes around ≈US$10–15, though pricing varies a fair amount between places. I'd rather not name spots that may have changed hands or moved; they're easy to find on maps once you're there. What matters: in Tainan the real coworking is cafés. It's a city of hundreds of independent coffee shops, many in restored old houses, and plenty are laptop-friendly. The local rule is minimum spend (低消): buy a ≈US$4–6 drink and you can stay. On weekends some impose a two-hour limit or ban laptops outright, so check the sign at the door. And if your day runs on calls, test a café before committing to an important one — noise levels vary enormously and almost none have enough outlets.
East District (東區, Dong Qu): around National Cheng Kung University. This is where most people land — cheap furnished studios, a rental market used to short leases because it's student territory, cafés, supermarkets and gyms within reach. West Central (中西區, Zhongxi Qu): the historic core, home to Shennong Street, the Confucius Temple and the Blueprint Culture & Creative Park. It's the only part of Tainan where you can genuinely live on foot, and it has the best food and cafés. The trade-off: old buildings, no parking, and scooter noise late into the night. Anping (安平): the coast, with the old Dutch fort and the sunsets. Newer, roomier apartments and a calm, family feel — but without a scooter you're stranded. Yongkang (永康) and North District (北區): cheap and charmless, residential, near the train station with easy access to the Southern Taiwan Science Park. This is the choice if price beats atmosphere for you.
ComunidadCommunity
Meeting nomads is hard; meeting people is easy. Tainan's foreign community rests on three legs: English teachers (the biggest and most stable group), international students at Cheng Kung, and a local creative scene of cafés, craft beer and workshops that welcomes outsiders. Pure digital nomads are thin on the ground — the density is in Taipei, and the bullet train gets you there in about 1h45 for ≈US$42 if you want to hit events, though note Tainan's high-speed rail station is out in Guiren, so add the shuttle train on top. Daily life runs in Mandarin, and here Taiwanese Hokkien is still very much alive — in markets and with older folks it's the default. English is noticeably weaker than in Taipei, so don't assume the cashier will follow you; keep a translation app open. That said, Tainan's reputation is warmth — people are patient, curious, and help before you ask. The fastest routes to friends are language exchanges near the university, Tainan expat Facebook groups, and running or cycling clubs.
The scooter is the number one risk here, not crime. Tainan has no metro and weak public transport, so nearly everyone rides a scooter — and Taiwan has a well-earned reputation for being hostile to pedestrians, with sidewalks blocked and aggressive intersections. If you've never ridden one, this isn't the place to learn, and you need an international permit (valid only for a short window from entry, extendable at the motor vehicles office) or a local license, with the motorcycle category included: on a tourist visa with no proper paperwork, your insurance may simply not cover you. The climate hits twice: May through September brings 33–35 °C with brutal humidity (your power bill will feel it), and typhoon season runs June to October. Fewer people mention this, but from November to March air quality in southwestern Taiwan is among the country's worst, because the northeast monsoon traps pollution over the plain — if you have asthma, weigh that. On rentals, the standard lease is one year with one or two months' deposit; furnished monthly places exist, but you pay more and almost everything is negotiated in Chinese, with listings on 591.com.tw and Facebook groups. The city closes early: much of the famous food sells out by 2pm and many places shut one fixed weekday — if you want nightlife, Tainan isn't your city. Carry cash: chains take cards, but the best food (markets and street stalls) is cash only. And the visa: many passports get 90 days visa-free (US, Canada, EU, UK, Japan, Korea, Australia), but several Latin American passports are NOT on that list and need a visa or eVisa — check yours with Taiwan's representative office before booking a flight. Entering as a tourist doesn't authorize you to work; if you want to stay properly, look into the Employment Gold Card.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
