¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Sliema? How much do you need per month in Sliema?
Sliema is the easiest nomad base in Malta and also one of the priciest: everything happens in English, the fibre is excellent, the sea is right there and flights to half of Europe are cheap. It works if you earn in euros or dollars and value the fact that nothing here is a bureaucratic ordeal; it doesn't work if you want cheap, quiet or nature — it's a wall of towers under permanent construction on a tiny island. From October to May it's a genuinely pleasant place; in July and August it's an oven packed with tourists.

Some of the best you'll find in the Mediterranean. Malta has near-universal fibre and cable coverage, and Sliema is dense and well served: Melita or GO will give you 200 Mbps to 1 Gbps for ≈US$35–50 a month, installed in days rather than weeks. Mobile (Epic, GO, Melita) is solid and there's 5G across the whole Sliema–St Julian's strip. The weak link isn't the internet, it's the power. Malta has a history of outages during heatwaves — in the summer of 2023 there were blackouts lasting hours, and days in some neighbourhoods, from blown distribution cables, and smaller episodes have repeated each summer since. If you live off video calls, keep a battery for the router and a mobile-data backup through July and August.

Small but real, driven more by iGaming companies and remote teams than by solo nomads. SOHO Office Space is the island's main operator and has a location on The Strand in Sliema itself, plus others nearby; there are also Regus-style serviced offices and smaller spaces in St Julian's and Gżira. A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$220–300, and a dedicated desk costs meaningfully more — check current prices when you arrive, they move often. The cheap alternative is the seafront cafés: decent wifi, but they fill up and get loud, so a lot of people end up working from home.
Sliema is basically Malta's foreigner neighbourhood, especially Tigné Point (new towers, expensive, sea views), the area around The Ferries and the seafront down to Fond Għadir and Qui-si-Sana. Next door, Gżira is the cheaper, uglier version of the same thing, ten minutes on foot and very popular with new arrivals. Ta' Xbiex and Msida, by the marina and the university, are a bit better value and quieter. St Julian's is adjacent and lively, but the closer you get to Paceville the more club noise you get; if you want calm and more square metres for the same money, Swieqi, just up the hill, is the residential pick.
ComunidadCommunity
Si esperabas el ambiente de Lisboa o Medellín, aquí es más "cerveza después de la oficina".Extremely easy in practical terms, which also makes it easy to stay inside the bubble. English is an official language: you won't need a word of Maltese for anything, banks and doctors included. Malta is one of Europe's most international countries by share of foreign residents — Italians, Serbians, Bulgarians, Indians, Filipinos, Brits — and there's a decent Spanish-speaking community, much of it people who came for iGaming customer-support jobs, where Spanish pays well. There are tech, iGaming and crypto meetups, constant afterworks, and very active Facebook and Telegram groups for housing and plans. Just know the scene skews employed-expat rather than pure digital nomad: if you were expecting the Lisbon or Medellín vibe, this is more "beers after the office".
Three things will wreck your month if you don't plan for them. First, construction: Sliema and Gżira have been in continuous demolition-and-build mode for years, with dust and jackhammers metres from your window, and it's the number one complaint of everyone living there — before signing, see the flat on a weekday morning and check which empty lots sit next door. Second, renting: long lets are officially registered and usually run a year minimum, agencies take their cut, and many landlords switch to holiday lets in summer, so flat-hunting in May or June means high prices and thin stock. Signing between October and March is far better. Third, the weather: July and August are humid, shadeless heat with the town full of tourists and English-language students, and winter is the inverse — mild outdoors, but flats have no insulation and no real heating, so you get cold, damp and mould indoors, a Maltese classic. Add that Malta is the EU's most densely populated country: brutal traffic, packed and unreliable buses even though they're free for residents, and rocky shore rather than sandy beach. On paperwork: EU citizens just register; everyone else has the Nomad Residence Permit, which carries a high annual income requirement (on the order of €42,000 after the 2024 increase) and its own tax treatment for foreign-source income — check current figures and conditions with Residency Malta before you count on it, because they've changed them more than once.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
