Cruda y hospitalaria a partes iguales.Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, wedged in a narrow valley along the Miljacka River and ringed by mountains. It's where East and West genuinely meet: in a few steps you cross from the Ottoman old town of Baščaršija to the 19th-century Austro-Hungarian quarter. Marked by the assassination that sparked World War I and by the 1990s siege, today it's warm, cheap and deeply café-driven. Raw and hospitable in equal measure.
Mejor épocaBest time
May-June and September-October are best. Winter is cold and snowy (there's skiing nearby, on the 1984 Olympic mountains); July and August are warm.
EntradaEntry
Bosnia is neither in Schengen nor the EU. Many nationalities enter visa-free for short stays; check your case.
PresupuestoBudget
One of Europe's cheapest capitals. A nomad lives well on $900-1,400/month; food and coffee are very cheap.
The center is entirely walkable. There's a historic tram, a cable car up Mount Trebević, and the nomad community is slowly growing.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Sarajevo? How much do you need per month in Sarajevo?
Sarajevo works if you want Europe at Balkan prices: cheap rent, a dollar coffee, mountains 20 minutes from the center, and a stay that does NOT eat your Schengen allowance, because Bosnia isn't Schengen. It doesn't work if you need a big nomad scene — you'll be one of very few, and the coworking ecosystem is tiny — or if your lungs are sensitive: from November to February the valley traps smoke from coal and wood heating and the air ranks among the worst in the world. It's a spring-to-autumn base, and a real think-twice in winter.

Several operators compete in the center (BH Telecom, Telemach, m:tel) with 100–300 Mbps fiber or cable plans for ≈US$20–35/month, stable and with enough upload for all-day video calls. The weak spot is old buildings: in parts of Baščaršija, Bistrik and Vratnik fiber never arrived and you get noticeably slower cable or ADSL, so ask WHAT connection the flat has and run a speed test before you sign, not after. On mobile, 4G covers the city and the valleys well; 5G came late to Bosnia and is still early-stage — don't count on it. City-wide power cuts are rare, and there's no censorship or blocking that forces you onto a VPN.
CoworkingCoworking
Small and volatile scene. There's a handful of spaces in Centar and Marijin Dvor, mostly tied to startups, NGOs or entrepreneurship programs, with monthly desks at ≈US$100–150 and day passes around ≈US$10–15. They open and close often, so don't book blind: message them and confirm they're still running before you move. The real alternative is the café — coffee is an institution in Sarajevo, nobody rushes you, and you can hold a table for hours on a couple of dollars, though café wifi is hit-or-miss and you'll want mobile data as backup. The honest catch: the indoor smoking ban is recent and enforcement is uneven; plenty of places still have people smoking, and a full workday in one is unbearable. Test a café for an hour before adopting it as your office.
Centar and Marijin Dvor is where most nomads end up: walkable, cafés and offices all around, tram at the door, and the flats best wired for fiber. Ciglane is the quiet gem — residential, terraced up the hillside, about 15 minutes on foot from the center, with its own market. Grbavica, across the Miljacka, is the local, good-value neighborhood: same tram line, lower rents, zero tourists. And Ilidža, at the end of the line, is green, family-oriented and clearly cheaper, but costs you 30–40 minutes of tram to the center. Baščaršija looks romantic in photos and is a bad place to live: bar noise, tourists, uninsulated buildings, and the worst internet in the city.
ComunidadCommunity
Small foreign community, but very easy to break into. There are plenty of people from international organizations, embassies and NGOs, exchange students, and a trickle of nomads; don't expect weekly tech meetups — social life happens in cafés and runs on invitation: meet one person and two weeks later you have a regular table. Young Bosnians speak notably good English, so you're fine in the center; less so outside it and with older people. The Spanish-speaking community is practically nonexistent — a Facebook group and little else. Day-to-day language is Bosnian; learning greetings and numbers opens doors immediately.
First and most important: the winter air. Sarajevo sits in a bowl of a valley, and from November to February thermal inversion traps smoke from coal and wood heating; on some days the city tops global worst-air-quality rankings. If you have asthma, allergies or small kids, this isn't a detail — it's the whole decision. Second: heating costs money and old flats are terribly insulated, so budget winter separately and ask whether the flat is on the district heating network or relies on stoves. Third, bureaucracy: as a foreigner you must register your address with the Service for Foreigners' Affairs, and it's the landlord who files it, on a very short deadline after arrival (the law says 48 hours); plenty rent off the books and don't want to register you, so ask BEFORE handing over a deposit or you'll be left without the paperwork. Fourth: the currency is the convertible mark (KM), pegged to the euro, and a lot still moves in cash — don't assume cards everywhere. On safety, the city is calm and violent crime is low; what is real is that rural parts of the country still have uncleared minefields, so if you head into the hills, stay on marked trails. On stays: Bosnia is not Schengen, and for many passports it's 90 days in 180 visa-free, which makes it the perfect "rest" between EU stints — still check your own case with the consulate before booking, since the rules change.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
