¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Santos? How much do you need per month in Santos?
Santos works if you want a real, functioning Brazilian city with the beach at the end of your street and São Paulo an hour and a half up the mountain — not if you're looking for a ready-made nomad scene, because there isn't one. It's flat, walkable, middle-class and ages well: kilometres of seafront gardens, decent hospitals, cheap and genuinely fast fibre, and rents that are higher than inland Brazil precisely because Paulistanos want to live here too. Portuguese isn't optional: outside a hotel lobby, almost nobody is going to switch to English for you.

This is Santos's strongest card. Brazil has world-class consumer fibre and it's cheap: Vivo, Claro and TIM all cover the city, 300-600 Mbps costs ≈US$15-20 a month, and video calls just work. Watch the upload, though: some plans are symmetric, many give you a fraction of the download speed — ask about upload before signing if you do heavy calls or push big files. Installation usually happens within days, but you need a CPF (the Brazilian tax ID) to sign up — that's the real bottleneck, not coverage. Mobile 4G is excellent everywhere in the city and 5G is available in the central areas; prepaid data is cheap, though a postpaid plan again needs a CPF. Honest caveat: summer thunderstorms and the odd building-level outage do happen, and old seafront buildings sometimes have awkward internal wiring — worth having a mobile plan with tethering as backup rather than assuming nothing ever drops.
CoworkingCoworking
Chica y local. Small and local. Santos has a handful of coworkings, concentrated in Gonzaga and the Centro, and the crowd is mostly local freelancers, small agencies and people orbiting the port — not remote workers passing through. I'm not going to name specific spaces, because turnover on the coast is high and I can't verify what's still open; look on the ground when you arrive and ask in your building. Prices run roughly ≈US$70-120 a month for a hot desk and ≈US$10-15 for a day pass, with fixed desks and private rooms notably more. Café-as-office isn't really a thing here — Brazilian cafés and padarias won't kick you out, but they're loud, tables are small and outlets are scarce. Most people who work remotely from Santos work from home, which is why a flat with a decent desk and a window matters more than the coworking question.
Gonzaga is the default landing spot: the central beachfront strip, walkable, everything open at night, and the biggest supply of short and medium-stay rentals. Boqueirão, Embaré and Aparecida are the neighbours along the same seafront — same beach, calmer, lots of older buildings with big apartments and sometimes a bit cheaper. Ponta da Praia, at the far end near the port channel and the Guarujá ferry, is quiet and family-heavy, good if you want space and don't mind being 20 minutes from the action. José Menino, on the São Vicente border, is the value pick with sand at the end of the street, and one or two blocks inland (Vila Mathias, Marapé) or out in Campo Grande, the island's inland commercial hub, prices drop clearly if you can live without the beach. The Centro Histórico has been slowly restored and is genuinely pretty by day, but it empties out at night — almost nobody lives there by choice.
ComunidadCommunity
Be clear about this: there is no nomad community in Santos. What exists is a foreign population tied to the port — shipping agents, maritime and logistics people, mostly on contracts and mostly not looking for new friends — plus plenty of Paulistanos who moved down to the coast and now work remotely from home. Day-to-day life happens entirely in Portuguese; outside hotels and a few port offices, English is rare, and Spanish is not automatically understood, though portuñol plus goodwill will get you through the bakery and the gym. You'll meet people through routine, not events: the beachfront gardens at sunset, running and beach volleyball, a gym, surf on the José Menino and Guarujá side, capoeira, a bar on Santos match days at Vila Belmiro. If you want an actual expat/nomad scene with meetups, it's in São Paulo capital, ninety minutes up the mountain.
The rental contract is the hardest part. A standard Brazilian lease wants a fiador (a local guarantor who owns property), a seguro-fiança policy, or several months' deposit — plus a CPF, which you'll need anyway for internet, a bank account, a phone plan and half the gyms. Budget on the assumption you'll pay a premium for a furnished short-term flat for the first months, and don't land in January: December to February is beach season and short-stay rents spike. Also: the advertised rent almost never includes condomínio and IPTU, which together can add 20-35% to what you thought you were paying. On the beach, check the water-quality (balneabilidade) report before swimming — the drainage canals discharge into the sea and after heavy rain several stretches are officially unfit to bathe in, even though the sand and the gardens are gorgeous. Summer (December-March) is hot, sticky and genuinely rainy, with dengue circulating in the state. The maresia — salt air — eats electronics, hinges and anything metal: don't leave the laptop next to an open window. Safety is better than São Paulo capital but neighbourhood-dependent: the Zona Noroeste, the Centro after dark and the São Vicente border deserve normal Brazilian caution — don't walk with your phone out. Add constant port truck traffic on the avenues, and the famously tilted seafront buildings (sand foundations; they're studied and monitored, but it's not an urban legend). Check your visa before booking anything: Brazil's digital nomad visa asks for roughly ≈US$1,500 a month in foreign income or around ≈US$18,000 in savings, and since 2025 US, Canadian and Australian citizens need an eVisa again — confirm current rules with the consulate, they've changed more than once. Finally, every dollar figure here moves with the real: the BRL swings a lot, so treat these as a shape, not a quote.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
