Half an hour away lies Alter do Chão, the village with white-sand freshwater beaches and clear water that the press dubbed the 'Amazonian Caribbean.' It's a comfortable base for the real Amazon -rainforest, rivers and river-dweller culture- without the crowds of Manaus.
