Sandakan

Aprox. 392,288 habitantesApprox. 392,288 people

Sandakan is a port on the east coast of Sabah, in the Malaysian part of Borneo, facing the Sulu Sea. It was the capital of British North Borneo and grew rich on timber; today its real draw is the nature around it. A few kilometers away is Sepilok, the world's best-known orangutan rehabilitation centre, and the trip up the Kinabatangan River — one of Southeast Asia's finest wildlife-watching areas: proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, hornbills — is organized from here. The town itself is functional and humid; you use it as a logistics base for all of that.

Mejor épocaBest time

Equatorial, hot and humid year-round. The drier season runs roughly March to October; the northeast monsoon brings more rain around November-February. For river wildlife any time works, but with less mud in the dry season.

PresupuestoBudget

Malaysia is cheap overall; Sandakan is even cheaper than peninsular Malaysia for food and lodging. The real cost is the tours: Sepilok, Kinabatangan, and the Turtle Islands are paid separately and push the bill up.

EntradaEntry

Malaysia admits many nationalities visa-free for up to 90 days. Note: Sabah has its own immigration control, so you get stamped again when arriving from elsewhere in Malaysia.

The town is walkable; for Sepilok and the river you use minivans, taxis, or the transfers the lodges include.
