Riga

Aprox. 742,572 habitantesApprox. 742,572 people

Riga is the largest of the Baltic capitals and one of northern Europe's loveliest cities. Its medieval old town beside the broad Daugava River is a maze of squares, spired churches and guild houses, but its real jewel lies outside the walls: one of the world's richest concentrations of Art Nouveau architecture, whole streets of modernist façades. Add a huge central market in former zeppelin hangars, a rising food and café scene and prices still gentle for the euro. Compact, walkable and with the Baltic close by, it's a capital that's easy to love.

Mejor épocaBest time

May to September, with long days, patios and pleasant temperatures; the Baltic summer is the peak moment. Winter is cold, dark and snowy, though the Christmas markets have their charm. Spring and autumn are quiet and cheap.

PresupuestoBudget

One of the eurozone's more affordable destinations: eating and drinking well costs noticeably less than in Western Europe, and the central market makes it cheaper still. Good value for staying in the center.

ConectividadConnectivity

Fast, cheap internet (Latvia has some of Europe's best speeds), wifi cafés and a few coworking spaces make Riga an underrated nomad base. It's in Schengen, uses the euro, and has cheap flights via airBaltic and budget carriers.

Arquitectura Art Nouveau

Riga has Europe's largest ensemble of Art Nouveau buildings: an estimated third of the center is in this style. Alberta iela and Elizabetes iela are the must-walk, with masks, faces and ornament on every façade.

One of Europe's largest markets, set in vast pavilions built as zeppelin hangars. Smoked fish, cheeses, berries, Latvian black bread: the best way to eat cheap and taste the Baltic pantry.

The Vecrīga maze culminates in the Town Hall Square with the House of the Blackheads, a red-façaded guild building rebuilt after the war. Around it, spired churches and medieval courtyards.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Riga? How much do you need per month in Riga?

Riga works if you want real Europe — EU, euro, trains, art nouveau architecture, an airport with direct flights across the continent — for well under what Lisbon, Berlin or neighbouring Tallinn cost, and with some of the fastest, cheapest fixed internet on the continent. It doesn't work if winter flattens you: from December to February the sun comes up around 9 and sets near 3:30pm, and heating can add over US$150 a month on top of rent. The nomad scene is small too: you come for quality of life, quiet and price, not for the community.

This is Riga's strongest card. Latvia has spent years among Europe's fastest and cheapest countries for fixed broadband: 300 Mbps–1 Gbps fiber for ≈€15–25 a month, wired even into old Soviet-era blocks. It's genuinely stable — power cuts and network outages just aren't a thing here — so long video calls and heavy uploads stop being a worry. Mobile: 4G nationwide, 5G across much of the city, cheap data. No censorship or blocks that force you to live behind a VPN. If something fails, it'll be your laptop, not the connection.

CoworkingCoworking

Small but decent scene, and cheap by European standards: ≈€120–180 a month for a hot desk, and day passes are usually available. Most spaces sit in the center and in the converted creative quarters — the Tallinas iela area and the office district around Sporta iela are where startups and shared spaces cluster. Heads up: don't expect the Lisbon or Medellín ecosystem; a lot of "coworkings" here are local company offices renting out spare desks, not nomad clubs with weekly events. Check prices and availability once you land, since spaces open and close often. The real alternative is café work — Riga has genuinely good specialty coffee (≈US$4 for a flat white) and quiet weekday rooms, though in winter they fill up because nobody wants to be outside.

Klusais centrs (the "quiet center") — the art nouveau district just north of downtown: gorgeous buildings, tree-lined streets, embassies, everything walkable. It's where most foreigners who can afford it end up. Miera iela and around — the city's bohemian street: coffee roasters, small bars, a young crowd; a good balance of price and life. Āgenskalns (Pārdaugava) — across the Daugava river, wooden houses, its own market, cheaper and quieter, 10–15 minutes by tram from the center. Teika — properly residential, functionalist blocks, low rents, zero tourism; good if you want space and budget over being close to everything. Avoid living inside Vecrīga (the old town): pretty, but it's bar noise, cobblestones and tourist prices.

ComunidadCommunity

It's a reserved city. Latvians aren't cold, but they take a while to open up, and there's no culture of befriending the next table over. The Spanish-speaking community is tiny — forget finding your people in Spanish. What you do get is a real mix of Latvians, Russian speakers (a large share of Riga speaks Russian at home) and a big Ukrainian community since 2022, plus international and Erasmus students. English is solid among under-40s, and in cafés, coworkings and restaurants you'll be fine; Latvian is hard and nobody expects you to learn it in three months. What actually works for meeting people is the tech/startup ecosystem — Riga has regular events and one big annual conference, TechChill — plus sports and hiking groups. In summer the whole city is outdoors and it's easy; in winter you have to chase it or you'll isolate.

Winter is the filter, not a footnote. From December to February the sun comes up around 9 and sets near 3:30pm, with grey skies for weeks and sub-zero temperatures. Plenty of people arrive in June delighted and break in January. If you've never lived a Baltic winter, test-drive one winter month before committing to a year. Heating is almost never included. Many listings quote rent "+ komunālie" (utilities separate), and in older buildings with central heating the winter bill can top US$150 a month, while summer is a fraction of that. ALWAYS ask what the previous tenant paid in January before you sign. Renting: the short-term furnished market is thinner than in southern Europe, and a lot of it moves through local classifieds (ss.lv) and groups rather than international platforms. Budget one to two months' deposit, and expect landlords who prefer long leases and euro transfers to a Latvian bank account. Visa: Latvia is Schengen, so if your passport is visa-exempt you get 90 days in any 180 and that's it — you can't stretch it by hopping to another European country. Latvia does have a digital nomad visa, but the key requirement isn't your nationality: it's that you work for a company (or your own company) registered in an OECD country, plus a minimum income tied to the Latvian average wage. And Schengen entry rules are shifting with the new border registration systems. Confirm with the consulate before you buy a ticket. Safety: Riga is safe overall and you can walk home at night in residential areas without drama. That said: the old town has tourist-trap bars with inflated bills and club touts, and the Central Market / train station area isn't pleasant after dark. Nothing dramatic, just common sense. And the obvious one: you're a few hours' drive from the Russian and Belarusian borders. Daily life is completely normal EU/NATO life, but your family will ask, and some travel insurers put fine print on the region — read it before you buy.
