Praia is the capital of Cape Verde, on the island of Santiago, a volcanic archipelago in the Atlantic off Senegal. It's the country's largest city, and its heart is the Platô, a flat plateau above the sea where the colonial buildings, squares and government cluster. It's a Creole African capital, Portuguese- and Kriolu-speaking, with morna and coladeira music playing everywhere. It serves as a base for the rest of Santiago, including Cidade Velha, the first European town in the tropics.

Mejor épocaBest time

Dry nearly all year. November to June is cool and pleasant; the scant rains fall August to October. A Saharan wind (the harmattan) often blows in winter.

PresupuestoBudget

Currency: the Cape Verdean escudo, pegged to the euro. Moderate prices; since almost everything is imported to the islands, groceries aren't as cheap as the country suggests.

EntradaEntry

Many nationalities enter visa-free; others pay an online airport security fee (TSA) before flying. Check Cape Verde's current rules.

The Platô is walkable. Beyond it, 'aluguer' (shared vans) and taxis link the city and the island; to hop islands, it's plane or ferry.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Praia? How much do you need per month in Praia?

No funciona si esperas precios "de África": casi todo se importa, la luz y el súper duelen, y la escena nómada es tan pequeña que la rutina social te la armas tú.Praia is Cabo Verde's working capital, not its postcard: if you want beach life and a ready-made nomad crowd, that's Sal (Santa Maria) or Mindelo, not here. It works if you want a calm Atlantic base — safe by regional standards — on UTC-1 (an hour behind Lisbon in winter, four ahead of New York), and you're fine living in Portuguese and Kriolu. It doesn't work if you expect "Africa prices" — nearly everything is imported, electricity and groceries sting, and the nomad scene is so small you'll have to build your social routine yourself.

For an island in the middle of the Atlantic, Praia is surprisingly solid: there's real fibre in the city (CVTelecom and Unitel T+) with plans typically running ≈20 to ≈100 Mbps, and 4G covers the whole capital well. 5G is barely getting started, so don't assume it or build your setup around it. It's plenty for video calls and normal work; upload is the weak spot, so schedule heavy uploads overnight. Two honest caveats: the power does cut out now and then (get a UPS or battery and keep mobile data as plan B), and the whole country hangs off submarine cables — if one faults, speeds degrade nationally for days and there's nothing you can do. No censorship, no VPN needed to work. Run a speedtest inside the apartment BEFORE you sign anything; it varies a lot building to building.

CoworkingCoworking

Minimal scene, let's be honest. Praia isn't a coworking town: there are spaces tied to incubators and the tech ecosystem the government has been pushing for years (Cabo Verde markets itself as a digital hub and built a technology park in the city), but flexible-desk options for a walk-in foreigner are few and turn over fast. I won't hand you names from memory — online listings age badly here: ask once you land, in the expat group or at your building's front desk. Where a monthly pass exists it runs ≈US$80–150, and most people end up working from home or from cafés and hotel lobbies in Palmarejo and Achada Santo António. There's no "laptop all afternoon" café culture: keep ordering and don't hold a table at lunchtime.

Palmarejo is the obvious pick: newer buildings, supermarkets, restaurants, close to Quebra Canela beach and to what little international life exists. Achada Santo António is the other sensible option — residential, with embassies, offices and food, a bit livelier and slightly cheaper than Palmarejo. Prainha is the quiet expensive strip by the sea, hotels and diplomats' houses: pretty, but dead and not very walkable. Plateau (Platô, the historic core up on the mesa) is the most central and has real character, great if you want to sit in the administrative heart, but it's noisy by day, empties out at night and the housing is old. The hillside bairros are far cheaper, and they're exactly where locals will tell you not to move without knowing someone first.

ComunidadCommunity

Don't expect weekly nomad meetups: Praia's foreign community skews aid workers, NGOs, embassies, resident Portuguese and Brazilians, and traders from the region (Senegalese, Bissau-Guinean, Chinese). You do meet people, but the slow human way: the gym, Quebra Canela beach on weekends, weekend nightlife and, above all, friend-of-a-friend introductions. The everyday language is Kriolu badiu (the Santiago variety), not Portuguese; Portuguese covers everything formal and gets you understood, and Spanish speakers pick it up faster than they expect — but Kriolu is its own thing and learning a few phrases genuinely opens doors. English is thin outside hotels: there's none of the tourist cushion Sal has. Cabo Verdeans are warm and sociable, and funaná and morna aren't tourist folklore here, they're real life — going out for live music is the single best way in.

Lo que nadie te diceWhat nobody tells you

Three things that will bite you if nobody warns you. One: money. The escudo is pegged to the euro at a fixed rate (≈110 CVE to €1, so roughly ≈95–105 CVE to US$1 depending on where the euro sits), so there's no exchange-rate bargain coming to save you. And a great many businesses only take Vinti4, the national card network — your foreign Visa or Mastercard will simply fail at a lot of terminals. Carry cash, budget for ATM fees, and open a local account if you're staying months. Two: housing and power. Leases are usually informal, cash, several months up front; short-term furnished stock is tiny, so Airbnb runs expensive and the good rentals surface through contacts, not websites. Electricity is punishingly expensive and water is desalinated — rationed in some bairros, so ask about the building's tank before you sign. Three: weather and flights. December to February brings the *bruma seca*, Saharan dust: hazy air, rough on allergies and asthma, and it sometimes delays or grounds inter-island flights. August to October is the rainy season — few storms but heavy ones, with flash flooding down the ravines that cut through the city. Island-hopping costs money and patience (pricey domestic flights, slow ferries with shifting schedules). On safety, Praia is manageable but not naive: phone snatching happens, Plateau empties after dark, and some bairros aren't for wandering unless you know them — don't walk with your phone in your hand, and take taxis at night. On visas: Cabo Verde does run a genuine remote-work programme (typically issued for around 6 months, renewable, requiring proof of income or bank balance) alongside short tourist entry, but requirements, eligibility by nationality and the airport fee change often — check the official source before you book the flight, not a blog.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
