Portoviejo

Aprox. 170,326 habitantesApprox. 170,326 people

Portoviejo is the capital of Manabí, on Ecuador's coast, sitting inland about half an hour from the sea. It's a hot, agricultural city that was largely rebuilt after the 7.8 earthquake that hit Manabí in April 2016. It isn't a postcard destination, but it's the gateway to Manabí cooking — some of Ecuador's best — and to nearby beaches like Crucita. You come for the food, the ceviche, and as a base for exploring the province.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Portoviejo? How much do you need per month in Portoviejo?

Súmale calor fuerte casi todo el año (y muy húmedo en época de lluvias) y una situación de seguridad provincial que se ha puesto seria: es base para quien habla español, trabaja solo y quiere estirar el dinero, no para quien llega a "conectar".Portoviejo works if your priority is spending very little, earning and living in dollars with zero currency risk, and eating some of the best food in Ecuador — it's the capital of Manabí, an administrative and university city, not a tourist destination. It doesn't work if you want a nomad community, a decent coworking space, or a life in English: none of that exists here, and the international scene is in Manta, about 45 minutes away. Add strong heat almost year-round (and heavy humidity in the rainy season) plus a provincial security situation that has gotten serious: this is a base for someone who speaks Spanish, works alone and wants to stretch their money, not for someone arriving to "connect".

Fiber exists and it's cheap: Netlife, CNT and Puntonet cover the center and the main residential areas, with advertised plans typically ranging from ≈50 to ≈300 Mbps for ≈US$25-35 a month. Download speeds usually deliver; upload is a lot lower, so if you do heavy video calls or push large files, ask explicitly about upload speed before signing. On mobile, Claro generally has the best coverage in Manabí. The real weak point isn't speed, it's power: Ecuador went through a serious electricity crisis — with scheduled blackouts of several hours a day, especially between September and December 2024 — caused by drought in the reservoirs that feed hydroelectric generation. Things improved afterwards, but the underlying cause is still there and the risk returns each dry season depending on water levels. If your work depends on being online, bring a UPS or a battery for the router plus mobile data as backup: here that isn't paranoia, it's what everyone does.

CoworkingCoworking

There's basically no scene. Portoviejo has the odd shared office tied to the university and the local business world, but I can't vouch for any names, so I won't sell you one: look them up on the map when you arrive and go see them in person before paying. If you find one, a reasonable monthly desk should land somewhere around ≈US$60-120, though this varies a lot — confirm it on the ground. The reality is that almost everyone works from home or from cafés, and what matters isn't community but A/C and a working power outlet. If coworking is genuinely non-negotiable for you, Manta is about 45 minutes away and has more options.

El Centro was rebuilt after the 2016 earthquake: it's the most walkable part of the city and where all the paperwork and shops are, but it's noisy by day and empties out at night. The area around the Universidad Técnica de Manabí is the easiest landing zone: there are rentals aimed at students and faculty, cheap food at all hours, and life on the street until late. Andrés de Vera and the other urban parishes around downtown are clearly cheaper and more local — you can live there for US$150-200 — but quality changes block by block, so walk the area before you sign. And along the roads out toward Manta and Crucita there are gated developments that are quieter and safer, with the downside that they essentially require a car. Honest bonus: a lot of people working remotely in the area end up living in Crucita, the beach in the same canton about 30-40 minutes away (best known for paragliding), and only come into Portoviejo for errands.

ComunidadCommunity

There is no nomad community, full stop. Don't expect remote-worker meetups or newcomer groups: the foreigners in Manabí are concentrated in Manta and Crucita, not here. Spanish isn't optional, it's mandatory — outside of university students and healthcare you'll find very little English. The good news is that manabitas are warm, direct and quick to adopt you: friendships happen through the gym, pickup football, work and friends of friends, not through an app. If you come with social patience and speak the language, you're in; if you expect the city to introduce you to people, you'll be bored in three weeks.

Security first, because it's the fact that most changes your life here: Manabí is one of the provinces hit hardest by narco-linked violence since 2021, and Portoviejo and Manta have seen high homicide rates; the whole country was under a state of emergency in January 2024 and there have been several more since. It rarely touches a foreigner who behaves sensibly, but it does change how you live: no walking at night through areas you don't know, phone out of sight on the street, and watch for snatch-and-run robberies from motorbikes. Second, the climate: Portoviejo is inland, so it feels hotter and less breezy than Manta; the muggy rainy "winter" runs January to April — with a real history of flooding from the Portoviejo river — and the rest of the year is drier and a bit cooler, but A/C is still a budget line, not a luxury. Third, this is genuinely seismic country: the magnitude 7.8 earthquake of April 2016 destroyed much of the downtown. Fourth, renting is an informal market: almost nothing is listed on platforms, you find places by walking, asking around or via Facebook Marketplace, with one or two months' deposit in cash and loose contracts — never pay several months up front without seeing the place. And visas: Ecuador gives most nationalities 90 days on arrival within a 12-month period, extendable up to 180; staying longer means an actual visa. The upside: the country has been dollarized since 2000, so there's no currency risk and no exchange-rate games.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
