It grew up around the Madeira-Mamoré railway, the "Devil's Railroad," built in the early 20th century at the cost of thousands of lives to bypass the river's rapids. It's an Amazon frontier city, hot and humid, shaped by cycles of rubber, gold and today soy and big hydroelectric dams on the Madeira. A gateway to the jungle more than a postcard.
