Port-Vila

Aprox. 35,901 habitantesApprox. 35,901 people

Port Vila curves around a sheltered bay on Efate, mixing a Melanesian market, national services, marinas and French-British traces. For a first reading, connect Centro de Port Vila, Erakor Lagoon, Port Vila Market, Vanuatu Cultural Centre: the market, lagoon and museum distinguish the capital from rural island excursions. Many Vanuatu attractions lie outside town and operate through communities; confirm access and fees after earthquakes or cyclones.

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Port-Vila?How much do you need per month in Port-Vila?

Port Vila is not a nomad base and never has been: the foreigners living there are Australian and New Zealand aid staff, UN and NGO people, embassies, resort owners and dive operators, plus the offshore crowd drawn by zero income tax and the citizenship-by-investment programme. There's no remote-work scene, no real coworking and no critical mass of people like you — it's a small island where almost everything is imported and the prices show it. It works if the ocean, the diving and small-town life pay you back for import prices, some of the highest cyclone and earthquake exposure on earth, and dependence on a handful of expensive flights; it doesn't work if you need a nomad community, cheap exits or fast travel.

Better than you'd expect for the Pacific, but don't romanticise it. Port Vila has been on the submarine cable to Fiji since 2014, so there is real fibre in town; in practice home plans deliver a few tens of Mbps, cost a lot for what they give, and many come with a data cap or fair-use policy — ask about the limit before you sign, not about the headline speed. What the cable doesn't fix is latency: everything routes via Fiji and Australia, so Australia and New Zealand are fine, the US is around 200 ms and Europe is north of 300, and you feel it on video calls. Mobile: Vodafone Vanuatu and TVL give usable 4G in Port Vila and much of Efate, thinning out fast beyond the island. Starlink has reached Vanuatu and plenty of people run it as a backup, especially after the December 2024 earthquake. No censorship or network blocking, but there are power cuts and outages from cyclones or infrastructure damage: a UPS and a mobile-data plan B aren't paranoia here, they're standard practice.

CoworkingCoworking

There is no coworking scene. Not "small" — there's essentially no dedicated, stable space where you turn up and pay a monthly fee, and be suspicious of any listing that claims otherwise. People who work on a screen do it from home, from the waterfront cafés (Nambawan Cafe is the classic meeting spot), or from hotel and resort lobbies and terraces, which usually have usable wifi if you're buying something. If you genuinely need an office, the real route is negotiating a desk inside an existing office — an NGO, a tour operator, an accounting firm — through a personal contact; the price is whatever you agree, not a published rate. Budget for cafés too: here "coworking" is paid in cappuccinos.

Elluk: the plateau above town, the long-standing expat neighbourhood — houses with bay views, cooler and breezier, and you'll need a car. Tassiriki and the Erakor lagoon edge: waterfront houses and apartments minutes from the centre, the most comfortable option if you want a kayak before your first call. Pango: the peninsula to the south, quieter and greener, good if you want ocean and space and don't mind driving. And the centre, along Lini and Kumul Highway: apartments above the bay where you can walk to banks, market and restaurants, the most practical car-free choice — but it's also where the December 2024 earthquake damaged buildings, so ask about the structural state of the place and whether it's been assessed before you sign anything.

ComunidadCommunity

Meeting people is easy precisely because there are so few: within a couple of weeks you're running into the same faces. The real social hub is the nakamal at sunset — kava is the national institution and everyone mixes there, at ≈US$1–2 a shell. Around that you get the yacht club and the steady flow of Pacific-crossing sailboats, diving, rugby and cricket, churches, and the closed loop of embassies, NGOs and agencies. What you almost won't find is people like you: the foreign community is Australian, New Zealander, French (a legacy of the condominium — Bislama, English and French are all spoken) and Chinese-Vanuatu business families, most on two- or three-year contracts, so it turns over constantly and everyone knows everything. There's also a wide and very visible gap between expat life and ni-Vanuatu life; a lot of people find it uncomfortable.

Three things can wreck your plan here. One: the natural risk isn't folklore — Vanuatu tops the global disaster-exposure indexes year after year, cyclone season runs November to April, and the ~7.3 earthquake of December 2024 damaged buildings in central Port Vila, killed people and hit the port and utilities; reconstruction is ongoing, so check on the ground what shape your building and the centre are actually in before committing. Two: flights. Air Vanuatu's 2024 collapse left connectivity badly hit and still unsettled; you arrive via Brisbane, Sydney, Auckland, Nadi or Nouméa, there are few flights, they're expensive and they get cancelled, and inter-island hops are unreliable — never build tight connections, and check the current airline situation before you buy anything, because it keeps changing. Three: healthcare. The hospital in Port Vila is basic and anything serious means evacuation to Nouméa, Brisbane or Auckland, with bills in the tens of thousands; don't come without insurance that includes medevac. Beyond that: the zero income tax is real, but there's no nomad visa and the tourist stamp (30 days, extendable) is not permission to work — it's a grey zone; and if anyone pitches the investment passport as a travel upgrade, note the EU stripped it of Schengen visa-free access. Day to day: no income tax but a 15% VAT baked into every price, electricity is brutally expensive and an A/C habit can double your budget, cards work in the tourist zone but it's cash everywhere else, and land is under customary tenure — you lease, you don't buy: never sign anything without a local lawyer.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
