New Guinea, faces the Gulf of Papua on the southeastern tip of the island of New Guinea. It's a city of hard contrasts: government offices and modern hotels next to informal settlements, with a reputation for insecurity that means moving carefully. But it's the gateway to one of the most culturally diverse countries on Earth, home to over 800 languages. Most travelers come for logistics —a jump-off to the Highlands or the islands— rather than for the city itself.
Mejor épocaBest time
The dry season, May to October, is the most comfortable with less rain. Being near the equator it's hot and humid year-round; the wet season brings heavy downpours from December to March.
PresupuestoBudget
Expensive and limited: PNG has little tourist infrastructure and high prices for what it offers. Secure hotels cost far more than elsewhere in budget Oceania. Budget generously.

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living
¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Puerto Moresby? How much do you need per month in Puerto Moresby?
Port Moresby isn't a nomad base — it's a posting. The people living there arrived on a contract with a package: LNG and mining and their contractors, Australian and NZ aid, embassies, banks, NGOs and churches, plus the Filipino, Malaysian, Chinese and Indian communities that run trade and construction. A regular nomad doesn't fit: the city is brutally expensive for foreigners (expat cost-of-living rankings consistently place it among the world's priciest, despite the poverty surrounding it), security is solved with a compound, a fence and a driver, and there's no remote-work scene to land in. The numbers below are reference points and assume you live the way foreigners actually live here, with security paid for. They swing wildly depending on what your contract covers, and doing it "budget" the way you would in Bangkok or Medellín isn't a realistic option.

It got a lot better once the Coral Sea Cable landed (Sydney-Port Moresby-Honiara, live since 2019) — before that nearly everything ran over satellite and was miserable. Today, in a decent building or an upper-end hotel you'll hold a stable video call, though plans come with data caps and the price per gig is still high for what you get. Mobile: Digicel has the widest coverage and works fine inside the city; step outside POM and it drops off fast. The real issue isn't the cable, it's the power — outages and load shedding are frequent, so a generator and a UPS are standard kit, not a luxury. There's no systematic censorship or great firewall, but authorities have imposed temporary social-media blocks and network filtering resurfaces as a debate now and then: keep a VPN installed just in case, even though you normally won't need it. If someone offers you satellite internet like Starlink, confirm current availability and regulatory status before you count on it.
CoworkingCoworking
There is no coworking scene in the sense you mean. Don't look for a specialty-coffee place full of laptops — it doesn't exist. What does work are the business centres and lobbies of the big hotels — Airways Hotel (next to Jacksons Airport), The Stanley in Waigani, Hilton Port Moresby, Grand Papua in Town — where a good chunk of the city's professional life actually happens: meetings, decent wifi, air conditioning and security. You pay by consumption or by the meeting-room day, and it isn't cheap. If you're posted here, your office will be your employer's or your own house, and that's the whole story.
Touaguba Hill: the ridge above the harbour, houses and apartments for diplomats and executives, walled and gated with 24/7 guards; the priciest and the calmest. Harbour City / Ela Beach: a relatively new waterfront development with offices, restaurants and the Royal Papua Yacht Club — the closest you get to being able to walk a stretch. Airways / Jacksons: a residential enclave beside the airport, popular with people flying in and out often, self-contained by design. Waigani: government district, the university and the Vision City mall; there's foreign housing, but it mixes more with the city. Boroko and Gordons hold the markets and local commerce and are where you'll be warned hardest not to wander alone, especially toward dusk.
ComunidadCommunity
A small, tight, closed-off community — which also makes it easy to plug into: in two weeks you'll have met everyone. Australians and New Zealanders are the base (mining, LNG, aid, banking), alongside sizeable Filipino, Malaysian, Chinese and Indian communities in trade, construction and hospitality, plus embassy, NGO and church staff. Social life happens in enclosed, membership-based places: the Royal Papua Yacht Club, the Aviat Club, the golf club, hotel bars and dinner at someone's house. Almost nobody socialises on the street at night, so your circle forms through work and through who invites you. There's nothing resembling a nomad meetup, and if you land with no local employer and no contact, you'll feel very alone very fast.
Security here isn't a vibe, it's a budget line and a daily routine: you don't walk at night, you don't pull your phone out on the street, you don't drive alone at odd hours, and carjacking is a real risk, not folklore. Nobody will fix a serious medical problem in the city — you get stabilised and evacuated to Cairns or Brisbane, so insurance with air evacuation is a requirement, not a suggestion. The kina isn't freely convertible and PNG has had foreign-currency shortages for years: getting dollars or moving money out can be slow and rationed, cards work basically only in hotels, malls and big supermarkets, and you should carry cash rather than assume your home bank will smooth it over. On visas there's nothing like a nomad permit: you enter on a tourist or business visa, and actually working requires employer sponsorship and a work permit — confirm the current process with PNG immigration before you book, because both the scheme and the e-visa system have changed several times. And if the plan was "I'll go explore the country": moving beyond POM means expensive domestic flights, real logistics and, in several areas, a guide or a local contact. This is not a city you improvise from.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
