It's the country's oil capital: the offshore rigs off its shore drive much of the national economy. The French founded it in the 1920s as the terminus of the Chemin de Fer Congo-Océan (CFCO), the railway that links it to Brazzaville across the country; its art déco station is a colonial landmark. Fronting the city is the Côte Sauvage, beaches open to the Atlantic. It's a hot, commercial port city rather than a tourist one.
