Podgorica

Aprox. 136,473 habitantesApprox. 136,473 people

Podgorica is the capital of Montenegro and its largest city, though few travellers picture it: the Adriatic coast and the mountains steal the spotlight. It sits in an inland valley where the Morača and Ribnica rivers meet, ringed by hills. It was heavily bombed in World War II, so much of it is socialist rebuilding with few old corners. It's a practical, cheap stop with good food and cafés, and a perfect base for Lake Skadar and the Morača canyon.

Mejor épocaBest time

Spring and autumn (April-June, September-October) are ideal. Summer in the valley is stifling — among the hottest in the Balkans.

PresupuestoBudget

Montenegro uses the euro without being in the EU. It's one of Europe's cheaper countries: coffees, beers and meals cost noticeably less than on the coast.

EntradaEntry

Montenegro isn't in Schengen, but many nationalities enter visa-free for tourism for a limited stay. Confirm your case before travelling.

A flat, compact city — walk or cycle. It's a rail and bus hub: connections to the coast and the mountainous north leave from here.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Podgorica? How much do you need per month in Podgorica?

It works badly if you're after a nomad scene, beauty, or nightlife: it's a small administrative capital of socialist-era blocks, wedged into a closed valley where summer is brutal and where not much happens on a Tuesday night. The postcard nomads are in Kotor, Tivat or Budva; Podgorica is for people who need a bank, an airport, government offices, and rent that doesn't spike in high season. Note: it uses the euro, so your dollar budget moves with the exchange rate, and prices have risen quite a bit since 2022.

For the size of the country, internet is one of Podgorica's genuine strengths. The three operators (Crnogorski Telekom, One and m:tel) sell home fiber in the 100–300 Mbps range for ≈US$25–35 a month, and it handles video calls all day without drama. Mobile 4G covers the whole city well and 5G exists, though don't assume it everywhere; a prepaid SIM with decent data runs ≈US$10–15 a month. The real issue isn't the advertised speed but the building: older construction sometimes only gets cable or ADSL, so run a speed test in the actual apartment BEFORE signing, and ask whether fiber reaches the unit or just the lobby. Occasional power cuts happen, mostly during winter storms, but this isn't a country of chronic blackouts, and there's no internet censorship. If your work can't afford a failure, keep a mobile data plan as backup.

CoworkingCoworking

The scene is minimal, and honestly that's Podgorica's weak spot. There are a handful of coworking spaces, monthly desks in the ≈US$100–160 range, but they open, close and change hands often, so I won't name any: find them once you're there, or ask in the expat groups before counting on one. What most people actually do is work from home or from cafés — café culture here is huge and nobody rushes you out after three hours with a macchiato — but café wifi is hit or miss, it's noisy, and the indoor smoking ban is loosely enforced, so winter can mean smoke. If a coworking space with a real community is non-negotiable for you, the country's actual scene is in Tivat and Kotor, not the capital.

City Kvart is where most foreigners end up: a newer residential complex across the Morača river, with elevators, air conditioning that actually works, and the Delta City mall right there. It's among the priciest parts of town and the easiest to arrange from abroad. Preko Morače more broadly (including the Blok V and Blok VI blocks) is the best value: solid socialist-era apartments, well located, walking distance to the center and the cafés on Hercegovačka, the pedestrian street. Stara Varoš, the old Ottoman quarter by the clock tower, has what little charm Podgorica offers, but these are old houses: brutal in summer and cold in winter unless renovated. And Zabjelo, Tološi or Momišići are clearly cheaper and more local, with the tradeoff that you depend on the bus or a car — and that's where English runs out.

ComunidadCommunity

Be ready to build it yourself. The big foreign community here is Russian and Ukrainian, arrived mostly since 2022, and it sets the tone: a lot of expat social life happens in Russian, with its own cafés, schools and Telegram groups. Spanish speakers are very few, so forget about finding a Latino community; if you speak Russian or Serbian, the whole city opens up. On the street it's Montenegrin/Serbian; English is decent among under-40s and in cafés, and close to nonexistent in government offices (for paperwork, bring someone who translates, or a lawyer). Organized meetups are few and sporadic: people meet at the gym, at their regular café, playing sports, or through Montenegro expat groups on Facebook and Telegram. It's a friendly city to whoever says hello, but it won't adopt you on its own.

Heat is warning number one: Podgorica sits in a closed valley and is one of the hottest cities in the Balkans. In July and August average highs run 33–35 °C and heat waves push past 40 °C, with nights that cool off little. Without working air conditioning it's unlivable — verify it before signing, don't trust the listing photo. In those months half the city leaves for the coast and the place feels dead. Winter is the other extreme: it rains enormously (one of Europe's rainiest capitals, with most of it between October and January) and air quality drops noticeably from wood heating trapped in the valley. Personal safety: it's a calm city with little crime against foreigners; the genuinely dangerous thing here is the traffic and how people drive. On rentals, watch two things: nearly everything is cash, and many landlords don't want to register the lease — and without a registered lease you can't file for residence, so negotiate that BEFORE handing over a deposit. Also, on arrival you must register with the police within 24 hours (the "white card"); the hotel or landlord usually does it, but if they don't, the fine is yours. Opening a bank account without residence is hard. Podgorica's airport is small with few direct routes (you'll often connect via Belgrade or Istanbul), so cheap flights to Spain or Latin America aren't as easy as they sound. And legally: Montenegro uses the euro but is NOT in the EU or Schengen, so days here don't burn your Schengen allowance or vice versa; there is a temporary residence permit for digital nomads, and plenty of people also handle long stays by opening a local company (D.O.O.) — but requirements and how offices actually apply them shift, so confirm with the immigration police or a local lawyer what's in force the day you apply, rather than trusting an old blog post. Any pre-2022 prices you read out there no longer apply.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
