It's a river port deep in rice country: the delta is the nation's granary and much of its trade moves by river. The city is famous for its hand-painted parasols, the 'Pathein umbrellas', a traditional craft. For travellers it's usually a stop en route to the Bay of Bengal beaches of Chaungtha and Ngwesaung to the west. Tropical monsoon climate, very wet in summer.
