Ottawa

Aprox. 812,129 habitantesApprox. 812,129 people

Canada's capital sits where the Ottawa River divides Ontario from Quebec, right across from the French-speaking city of Gatineau. It's a calm, green capital, dominated by the neo-Gothic towers of Parliament and threaded by the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO site that freezes in winter into the world's longest skating rink. Genuinely bilingual, with strong national museums, markets and pleasant neighborhoods, Ottawa is more civic than wild, but very easy to enjoy on foot.

Mejor épocaBest time

Summer (June-September) for warm weather and patios, and February if you want to skate the Rideau Canal and catch the Winterlude festival. Autumn brings spectacular foliage in nearby Gatineau; winter is long and bitterly cold.

PresupuestoBudget

Canadian prices, somewhat gentler than Toronto or Vancouver. Many national museums are free on certain days or evenings, which helps. Market food in ByWard is a good middle ground.

Downtown, Parliament, the canal and ByWard are all walkable. There's light rail (O-Train Confederation Line) and OC Transpo buses. Crossing to Gatineau (Quebec) over the bridges is easy and worth it.

Qué ver y reservar en OttawaWhat to see and book in Ottawa

Parliament Hill

The neo-Gothic Parliament buildings above the river are the city's symbol. You can take a guided tour, watch the summer changing of the guard, and walk the grounds for views over the Ottawa River.

Canal Rideau

A UNESCO World Heritage site, this 19th-century canal runs through the city. In summer you walk and boat along it; in winter it freezes into nearly 8 km of skateable ice, a very Canadian experience.

National Gallery of Canada

The country's great art museum, recognizable by Louise Bourgeois's giant 'Maman' spider at the entrance. Strong on Canadian and Indigenous art, with views over the river and Parliament Hill.

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Ottawa? How much do you need per month in Ottawa?

Ottawa works for you if your income is in dollars or euros and you value a city that simply works: one of the safest, tidiest capitals its size, first-world internet, decent healthcare and transit, and real nature (Gatineau Park) 20–30 minutes away. It doesn't work if you came to save money — it's expensive, everything is paid in Canadian dollars, and winter costs you both cash and mood — or if you want a nomad hub: this is a quiet government town with short nightlife and a small remote-work community. From December to March a normal day sits between −14 and −5 °C, with cold snaps at −25 and wind chill making it worse, and social life moves indoors; if that drains you, pick another base.

Among the best you'll find anywhere. Bell fibre runs 500 Mbps to 1 Gbps — symmetric where fibre reaches, which is much of the core and the newer suburbs — with Rogers cable where it doesn't; cheaper independent providers resell over those networks, so it's worth comparing. Real-world price ≈US$55–75/month, less if you negotiate or take a 12-month promo. Service outages are rare: what kills your connection here isn't the infrastructure, it's big storms (the May 2022 derecho left areas without power for days, and ice storms hit every few winters). Keep a battery-and-mobile-data plan B if your work can't stop. 4G/5G coverage is excellent citywide and across the river in Gatineau; Canadian mobile plans are still pricey by international standards, though they've dropped a lot since 2023 thanks to low-cost carriers. Public libraries and cafés have usable wifi.

CoworkingCoworking

Small scene, aimed at government-ecosystem consultants and startups rather than passing nomads. You'll find branches of the international flexible-office chains (Regus and similar) downtown, plus a handful of independent spaces in Centretown, Hintonburg and Westboro; a monthly hot desk runs ≈US$220–300, a day pass ≈US$25–35. Invest Ottawa runs the Bayview Yards innovation centre, more startup-focused than drop-in, but worth asking if your project fits. I won't name independent spaces because they open and close often and I don't want to send you to a dead address — check on arrival. Meanwhile, Ottawa's public library network is free, quiet and surprisingly good for working, which matters more in winter than you'd think.

Centretown is the obvious pick if you want to walk everywhere: apartment towers, Bank Street for food and bars, downtown at your feet. Hintonburg and Wellington West is the corridor with the most character — specialty coffee, breweries, a thirty-something crowd — and it's where most freelancers and remote workers end up; Westboro, a bit further west, is the pricier, tidier version of the same. The Glebe and Old Ottawa South are residential and expensive: old houses, the Rideau Canal out front, family vibe; great if you run or cycle. Sandy Hill is the cheap central option because it's uOttawa student territory: low rent, more noise, wildly uneven apartment quality. And across the river is Gatineau/Hull, in Quebec: clearly cheaper rent, 15 minutes from downtown, but a different province (different healthcare, different taxes, different transit system) and daily life happens in French.

ComunidadCommunity

Ottawa is officially bilingual: on the Ontario side you live perfectly fine in English, in Gatineau French rules. It's a government and embassy town, so there are plenty of foreigners — large Lebanese, Chinese, Somali and Indian communities — and a Spanish-speaking community that exists but is modest, without the critical mass of Toronto or Montreal. Meeting people takes more effort than in a nomad hub: most people here have a 9-to-5, a family and a routine, and aren't hunting for new friends every week. What does work: tech meetups, run clubs, winter sports leagues, French and English classes, and snow sports as a social excuse — cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in Gatineau Park are reliable; skating the Rideau Canal no longer is, since warmer winters have produced very short seasons and even one year with no opening at all. If you arrive in January, sign up in your first month for something with a fixed weekly slot or you'll isolate.

Winter isn't a detail here, it's the whole city: December to March a normal day runs −14 to −5 °C, with cold snaps at −25 and wind chill making it worse, snow from November to April, and darkness by 4:30 pm. Budget for real clothing (≈US$400–600 the first time) and read your lease: many rents exclude "hydro" (electricity and heating), which adds ≈US$60–110 a month in winter. Healthcare is the expensive blind spot: as a visitor you have NO provincial coverage (OHIP requires residency), so travel health insurance isn't optional — an uninsured ER visit runs into thousands of Canadian dollars. The rental market is tight, though it has loosened somewhat since the 2023 peak: landlords want references and Canadian credit history — which you don't have on arrival — and 12-month leases. In Ontario the only thing legally collectable up front is last month's rent (plus a reasonable key deposit); a "damage deposit" isn't legal, so treat that request as a red flag. Short-term furnished carries a heavy premium, and Ottawa regulates Airbnb-style rentals (they must be the host's principal residence and licensed), so there's less supply than you'd expect; many people book a month somewhere temporary and then sign. Watch the prices you see: almost nothing includes the 13% HST or the 15–20% tip, and you pay in Canadian dollars, so if the exchange rate moves, your budget moves. On visas: Canada has no digital nomad visa; you enter as a visitor (usually up to 6 months, decided by the border officer) and work remotely for clients abroad. Verify BEFORE booking a flight: since 2024 Mexicans need a visitor visa unless they've held a Canadian visa in the last 10 years or hold a valid US visa (then an eTA is enough); Colombians, Peruvians and Argentines, among others, need a full visitor visa. Confirm on the official IRCC site — these rules change. One last honest warning: nightlife is short and many restaurants close early. This is a city to live well in, not to go out in.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
