Odesa

Aprox. 1,001,558 habitantesApprox. 1,001,558 people

Odesa is Ukraine's great Black Sea port, founded in the late 18th century under Catherine the Great and grown into a cosmopolitan, mercantile city famous for its humor. Its center is an elegant grid of neoclassical facades sloping to the sea down the legendary Potemkin Stairs. It was a melting pot of Russians, Ukrainians, Jews, Greeks and Italians, and it shows in its accent, food and literature. An honest note: this is a city in a country at war; check official advisories and verify the situation before any trip.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Odesa? How much do you need per month in Odesa?

Odesa is cheap, has first-world internet, and a street life that refuses to shut down — but it's a city at war. Near-daily air raid alerts, drone and missile strikes on the port and the power grid, blackouts, and a nightly curfew. It works if you have an actual reason to be there (work tied to Ukraine, a partner, volunteering, press) and you take the risk with your eyes open. If you just want a cheap base for a few months, this isn't it: what you save doesn't cover what you're risking, and a normal travel policy excludes war zones.

The line itself is excellent and absurdly cheap: 100–1,000 Mbps fiber depending on the plan, for around ≈US$6–9 a month, with good latency to Western Europe. Ukraine has one of the best speed-per-dollar ratios anywhere and Odesa is no exception. The problem was never the cable, it's the power: strikes on the grid cut electricity for hours — sometimes on scheduled blocks, sometimes with no warning — and with no power your router is dead even if the fiber is fine. So half the city runs a UPS or a portable power station, many buildings have a generator, and cafés advertise it on the door; several keep Starlink as backup. Mobile: solid 4G in the city (5G barely starting), towers run on battery for a while and coverage degrades in long blackouts. Western sites aren't censored, though Russian services (VK, Yandex, Mail.ru) are blocked by decree. Odd but real detail: GPS jamming against drones wrecks maps and taxi apps. If you have critical calls, build redundancy — battery, mobile data, and a backup spot with a generator — and expect to cut a call short for an air raid alert.

CoworkingCoworking

Odesa was a serious IT and outsourcing hub before 2022, so the coworking infrastructure genuinely existed and a lot of it is still standing. The scene today is thinner: some spaces closed, others run on a generator with basement shelter access — which is literally part of the sales pitch. I can't tell you with confidence which ones are open this month; check on arrival or ask in local Telegram groups, which is where everything gets coordinated here. Ballpark: ≈US$80–150 a month for a flex desk. In practice a lot of people work from downtown cafés that installed a generator and backup wifi; they're de facto offices and they work fine.

The historic center (Prymorskyi district, around Deribasivska and Soborna Square) is where nearly every outsider lands: late-1800s buildings, everything walkable, cafés and groceries around the corner. Frantsuzkyi Boulevard is the calmer, greener version of that, with better and slightly pricier apartments. Down the coast, Velykyi Fontan is residential, family-ish and cheaper per square meter, at the cost of depending on the tram or a taxi. Arkadia is the beach and nightlife strip: newer buildings, very seasonal, half-empty in winter. Moldavanka is the cheap neighborhood with character, but I wouldn't pick it as a first landing if you don't speak the language. One filter that actually matters here and nowhere else: ask whether the building has a usable basement shelter, and how close you are to the port and to energy infrastructure.

ComunidadCommunity

There is no nomad community. The foreigners you'll see are journalists, NGO and humanitarian staff, contractors, the odd expat who stayed, and Ukrainians displaced from other regions. Spanish speakers: essentially zero — don't count on finding people in your language. Daily life still runs heavily in Russian — Odesa has always been a Russian-speaking city — with Ukrainian increasingly present, mandatory in customer service, and politically loaded; making the effort to open in Ukrainian is noticed and appreciated. English is limited outside younger people, the IT sector, and downtown hospitality. That said, local hospitality is real and the war made people fiercely supportive of each other: if you get involved in something (volunteering, a gym, language classes) you make genuine connections fast. Everything is organized on Telegram, including the alert channels, which you'll check more than any social network.

Antes de comprar un pasaje, leé el aviso de viaje de tu cancillería: casi todas recomiendan no ir.First and only thing that really matters: this is an active war zone. Odesa takes drone and missile attacks, mostly aimed at the port, port infrastructure and the power grid, and the hits reach residential buildings. There's a nightly curfew under martial law (the hours change — confirm on arrival), frequent air raid alerts, and shelters you need to locate before you need them. Practical consequences: a normal travel policy excludes war zones, so a medical evacuation is on you unless you hold a specific war-risk plan; the airspace is closed, so you enter overland from Poland, Moldova or Romania plus several hours by train or bus; don't photograph air defenses, military personnel or strike sites — people get detained for exactly that; and respect checkpoints. Immigration rules for foreigners changed under martial law — confirm stay limits and registration with the migration service rather than assuming the pre-2022 rules. Special warning if you hold dual Ukrainian citizenship: men aged 18 to 60 are barred from leaving the country and can be mobilized, and your other passport won't get you out. The coast was mined: swim only in officially opened zones and take the signs seriously, they aren't decorative. Add winter with blackouts and unreliable heating, and informal cash-or-transfer rental deals with little legal protection. Before you book anything, read your own government's travel advisory — nearly all of them say don't go.
