¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Mzuzu? How much do you need per month in Mzuzu?

Mzuzu is Malawi's third city and the capital of the north: very cheap in dollars, at around 1,250 m (cool weather, none of the lakeside heat), with a real foreign community — but almost all NGO, mission and university people, not nomads. It works if you're coming for a long project, can live with near-daily power cuts and know how to work off mobile data as backup. It doesn't work if your job depends on uninterrupted video calls, or if you expect coworking, delivery and city life: there's no nomad scene here and the power goes out most days.

Be honest with yourself: this is Mzuzu's weakest point. Fixed internet exists in the good areas (national providers like MTL, Skyband or Access), but coverage is block by block, not city-wide — ask about the exact house before signing, not the neighbourhood. Real speeds of 5–20 Mbps are the norm; if someone promises more, test it yourself before paying. Airtel and TNM mobile covers the city well and is everyone's backup, with decent 4G downtown and data that's expensive relative to local income. The real problem isn't bandwidth, it's power: ESCOM load-sheds almost daily, and a house without an inverter or battery leaves you with a dead router mid-call. Starlink now operates in Malawi and it's what saves a lot of people up north, but confirm coverage, the current plan price and how the kit gets into the country before you count on it.

CoworkingCoworking

There's no coworking scene in Mzuzu — no point pretending otherwise. The country's hub-style spaces are in Lilongwe and Blantyre, not here. People who work remotely do it from home (with an inverter) or from cafés and restaurants that tolerate long sittings: Mzuzu Coffee Den, tied to the city's coffee cooperative, and Kaya Papaya are the names every foreigner in Mzuzu knows; backpacker lodges like Mzoozoozoo also offer wifi and a table. None of them is a real workspace: no guaranteed sockets, no call room, no power backup for their own internet. Budget zero for coworking and put that money into a battery or inverter and mobile data, which is what will actually keep you online.

Katoto is where most NGO people and foreigners on contract live: houses with gardens, quieter streets, the best services-to-price ratio in the city. Chiputula is the other well-off residential area, up high with good views. Luwinga is the area around Mzuzu University — younger crowd, rooms to rent, student budgets. And the centre (around the roundabout and the market) is where the practical stuff is — banks, supermarkets, minibuses — but it's loud and not where you want to sleep if you're working during the day.

ComunidadCommunity

Meeting people is easy, but expect almost none of them to be nomads: Mzuzu's foreign community is NGO, mission, aid and university staff — people who live here for years and keep office hours. They gather at the same two or three restaurants, so in a couple of weeks you'll know half the scene. English is an official language and is used for all paperwork and business, so you can function fine; day-to-day life at the market and on the minibus runs in Chitumbuka, and learning ten phrases changes how you're treated. Spanish speakers: essentially none, don't count on it. Malawians have a deserved reputation for warmth, but real friendships come through work, church or sport, not apps or meetups — there's no nomad event calendar here.

What a friend would tell you before you book: the issue here is money and utilities, not safety. Malawi has a chronic foreign-currency shortage and the kwacha has devalued hard, so your basket really does inflate even though the country stays cheap in dollars; ATMs run dry, cards fail, and everyone carries US cash (new, large-denomination bills) to change. Tied to the same problem are periodic fuel shortages: hours-long queues at petrol stations and transport prices spiking overnight. On top of ESCOM's power cuts, add water cuts from the Northern Region Water Board — a house without a storage tank leaves you dry for days. On rent, landlords commonly ask for 3 to 6 months up front in cash — negotiate it, and hand over nothing without a written contract. Weather: Mzuzu is one of the wettest places in Malawi, with a heavy season from December to March (dirt roads turn to mud, power cuts get worse) and cold nights in June–July, so bring warm clothes nobody expects to pack for Africa. Even at 1,250 m there's malaria risk — use a net and ask about prophylaxis, especially if you're heading down to the lake. Immigration-wise: there's no digital nomad visa; you enter as a tourist and extend at immigration, but Malawi has been shifting its visa rules, so check the requirement for your passport shortly before you fly. Working remotely on tourist status is a grey area: if you're planning a year, get a proper permit instead of chaining border runs.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person.
