Mascate
Aprox. 797,000 habitantesApprox. 797,000 people
Muscat stretches as a strip of low, white city between the Sea of Oman and the bare Hajar mountains, with almost no skyscrapers: by law, buildings respect traditional scale and tones. It's a calm, clean capital, strikingly conservative in its look, with Portuguese forts, an old harbor and a grand modern mosque. Against Dubai's glitz, Oman plays a different card: unhurried hospitality, wadi and desert landscapes a short drive away, and a cultural pride that makes Muscat one of the Gulf's most pleasant capitals.
Mejor épocaBest time
October to April, when the heat is bearable and you can walk and head into the desert. In summer (May-September) temperatures easily top 40°C with high coastal humidity; being outdoors is punishing.
PresupuestoBudget
Omán no espera propinas agresivas.Pricier than Southeast Asia, a notch below Dubai. Your own transport (a rental car) is almost essential and adds up; eating at local cafés and juice bars is affordable. Oman doesn't expect aggressive tipping.
The city is long and spread out; renting a car or using taxis and apps is wise. The Mutrah corniche is a pleasure on foot, but distances between districts (Mutrah, Ruwi, Qurum, Al Khuwair) are big and highway-connected.

Qué ver y reservar en MascateWhat to see and book in Mascate
The country's most impressive religious building: a vast marble mosque with one of the world's largest Persian carpets and a giant chandelier. It opens to non-Muslims in the mornings, with a strict dress code.
The Mutrah waterfront at dusk and its covered souq are the classic outing: clouds of incense, dhows in the harbor and the floodlit forts. One of the Gulf's most authentic and enjoyable markets.
Palacio Al Alam y fuertes
The sultan's ceremonial palace, with its blue-and-gold façade, closes a square flanked by the forts of Al Jalali and Al Mirani, built by the Portuguese in the 16th century to guard the harbor entrance.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Mascate? How much do you need per month in Mascate?
Muscat works if you want a Gulf-level-safe base — clean, orderly, with staggering nature next door (wadis, mountains, desert, diving) — and you don't mind a city you live in by car. It doesn't work if you want a nomad community, nightlife, or Southeast Asia prices: there's basically no digital nomad scene here, alcohol is tightly restricted, and from May to September the humid heat keeps you under the AC. It's the Gulf: a lot cheaper than Dubai, but not cheap. One practical note: the Omani rial is pegged to the dollar, so these USD figures won't swing on you with the exchange rate.

Internet y señalInternet & signal
Bien. Good. Home fiber in Muscat typically runs 100–300 Mbps, stable, at ≈US$40–80/month; the providers are Omantel, Ooredoo and Awasr. 4G/5G in the capital is solid and blackouts are rare — Oman's grid is good. The real issue isn't speed, it's filtering: Oman has long blocked VoIP calls on messaging apps (WhatsApp, FaceTime), and plenty of people use a VPN for that. Work platforms like Zoom, Teams and Meet have worked. The restriction has loosened and tightened over the years and varies by carrier, so check on arrival before you build your workflow on one specific app. Outside the capital, in the wadis and up in the mountains, coverage drops off fast.
CoworkingCoworking
Small scene, and not the "coworking built for nomads" logic you know from Medellín or Bangkok. What exists is business centers renting offices and desks by the month, a few incubator-linked spaces, and Knowledge Oasis Muscat (KOM), the government tech park in Rusayl where much of the startup ecosystem sits — though it's a long way from the center without a car. In practice a lot of people work from cafés in Al Khuwair, Qurum and Shatti Al Qurum, which have decent wifi and don't mind you staying for hours. Budget ≈US$130–260/month for a flex desk, with the caveat that supply is so thin that prices swing a lot: ask directly before you plan around that number.
Al Khuwair is the practical bet: apartment blocks, offices, supermarkets and cheap restaurants, fairly walkable within the neighborhood and well connected by highway. Ghubrah and Azaiba are the best value-for-location residential stretch, near the beach and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. Shatti Al Qurum and Qurum is the pretty, pricier side: beach, cafés, embassies, the expat social life. Al Mouj, by the marina near the airport, is the resort-style enclave with the highest concentration of Western expats and prices to match. Muttrah, the old souq-and-port quarter, is the most authentic and cheapest, but the housing stock is old and it's far from the offices. Further out and cheaper still: Seeb, Mabela and Al Amerat, where you're a hundred percent dependent on a car.
ComunidadCommunity
Making friends takes more work here than in a typical nomad hub. Most of the foreign population is from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Philippines, and there's a small Western bubble (oil and gas, teachers, embassies) that moves in its own circles. Digital nomad community: essentially none, and tech meetups or coliving barely exist. What does work: outdoor groups — mountain hiking, diving, 4x4 trips, kayaking — plus the gym and the expat Facebook and WhatsApp groups, which are the real channel for finding out about anything. In Muscat you'll get by in English fine at shops, banks and restaurants; Arabic is the official language and learning the basics opens doors. Spanish speakers are very few: don't count on a Latino community.
Five things will hit you. The heat: May through September means 40 °C and up with coastal humidity; life moves indoors and your power bill spikes. The car: Muscat stretches for tens of kilometers along the coast and public transport (Mwasalat buses) is limited; without a car or a daily taxi budget you're stuck in your neighborhood. And note that regular taxis have no meter — you agree the price before you get in. Housing: rental contracts are usually one year, with a deposit and cheques up front, and formal landlords ask for residency paperwork; if you're coming for a few months you'll end up in a furnished flat or a hotel apartment, which is convenient but pricier than the annual-contract figures. Alcohol: sold only at licensed hotels and restaurants and at shops where residents need a personal license; going out for drinks is expensive and limited, and fines for drinking or being drunk in public are serious. The visa: Oman has no digital nomad visa; you come in on tourism (many nationalities get a short visa-free entry or a 30-day e-visa, extendable), so staying for months means visa runs or rethinking your status — check the current rules on the official portal before booking a flight. Also: during Ramadan you don't eat, drink or smoke in public during daylight and many restaurants close until sunset, and the weekend is Friday–Saturday, with the city dead on Friday morning. The upside, and it's real: Oman is one of the safest countries you could live in, people are genuinely kind, and walking at night is a non-issue.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
Dónde poner tu base en Mascate, por barrio:Where to base yourself in Mascate, by neighborhood:
Mutrah
The most atmospheric district: the waterfront corniche by the harbor, the labyrinthine Mutrah Souq selling frankincense, silver and textiles, and old houses at the foot of the hills. This is Muscat at its most evocative, best walked at sunset.
Qurum
A more modern area with the long Qurum beach, parks, malls and plenty of restaurants. It's where the middle class and expats go about daily life, and a good base for staying near the sea.
Old Muscat
The historic walled core around the Al Alam Palace, flanked by two Portuguese forts above the sea. This is ceremonial, monumental Muscat, quite different from the commercial bustle of Ruwi or Al Khuwair.
